Pro Tools LE8 - MPC2000XL

Hi guys,

I've recently purchased Pro Tools LE8, digidesign Mbox 2 interface and the Oxygen8 V2 keyboard. It's all connected & fine but I just wondered if anybody knew how to get pro tools to read what I play on the MPC2000XL? I've watched many youtube videos and read random things on the net but haven't been successful so far.

both use midi so it would be a matter of setting up midi tracks for both units which, @ the end of the day, would be pointless unless u were using the 2kxl with a soft synth or whatever. that would defeat u using the keyboard. what are your intentions with the mpc, then we can answer u better plus... this shouldve been in the production section

It really is worth it if you want to record your midi to pro tools, and record your midi from pro tools

To be honest I've inherited the MPC2000XL from my older brother so kinda don't want to neglect it. I recently bought the pro tools package more for editing projects as I am aware it is the main audio program used in the media industry and i have a history of audio editing at a high level with adobe audition and wanted to take it to the next level. I don't know anything about setting up a studio and am not really sure how it all works, i'm a real novice in the music production game (just been reading bits & watchin a lot of youtube clips).

My intention with the mpc is to make it so whenever i hit the pad, i can hear it in pro tools but i don't believe you can do that can you?

I now think the way it will have to work is that i make the whole beat/tracks/sequences in the mpc and then record it in pro tools by sync, is this correct?

you can trigger sounds in protools using an mpc, it's just a matter of setting it up as a midi instrument in protools and having something like a usb to midi cable to plug into the mpc or if you hav a mbox 2 then it should have midi plugs available.

go to your set up options in pro tools to make a "new instrument" and when you wanna use the mpc to trigger sounds set up a midi track with the mpc as an input and open a new track with the program and set it up to be triggered by the mpc... protools will recognize it as an MPC 2000xl. mess around with it and if you cant get let us know, but once you have it it bercomes pretty simple

now if you are composing beats inside the mpc, whether you sample or manipulate sound libraries, you can get close to the same style of editing available in pro tools. tracking out your beats allows for things such as eq and more. that way you can further utilize both units and have the ability of doing full compositions in the mpc and then you can mix and master in pro tools. i have the same setup minus the keyboard( well i have an axiom 25 that collects dust).


the secound option is better for having the ability to create stylish human errors or natural playin w/o coming off a a robot. if u got it from your bro then it's gotta be fate for you to master it...

try sampling from vinyl or sound libraries. you'll find that with some patience you can do alot in the mp...
