If I were Aja, I'd ignore everything Jamon said. If he followed my advice he'd probably go bankrupt. Who cares how good a tool is technically when most of the people buying it are tools themselves. Forget the functions, gimme a grill with my name on it!

Truth is, even though MPC-Forums has more advanced posters than a place like FutureProducers, there aren't many who really get deep into it, and this site is a relatively small population anyways. If he went after people like me he'd be in debt forever.

Just make that Thang as wack as possible. Maybe even have an algorithm so they can push 1 button to get an automatically generated random beat. Then have a 10-page instruction manual on how to push that 1 button called, "How to be a famous producer".

By the time the Kangz are millionaires, some hardcore nerds will have created their own OS for the Thang hardware, which is fully geeked out with every imaginable audio/MIDI function, with hundreds of impossible-to-remember shortcuts, and Pac-Man.

100 people in the world will use it, and it won't affect their sales at all. By then JJ's sequencer will have flopped, and Akai will abandon the MPCs for a controller/software combo like Maschine. This site will still be up, but 99% of posts will be in 'Off topic'.

So does that mean you're canceling your pre-order, Jamon?

To me, the beat thang has mad potential as a good tool. I couldn't give two shits about the marketing, or whatever everyone else has a problem with. If it ends up working better for me than what I currently have, that's a big bonus for me.

The grill, **** it! I always wanted to do a cool mod, but I don't have the time and shit to do that. If it comes to me in the box with my name on it in chrome. I'll be like this son

i just got mine today and blows programs like fruity loops and reason right outta the water

I was using Fruity Loops back in '98, and it could do more 10 years ago than Beat Thang does today.

That doesn't mean Beat Thang can't grow, but how could it possibly blow FL Studio out of the water? Right now it doesn't do much other than sample, build kits, and let you record the patterns of pads you tap, arrange the patterns into songs, and mix in some FX. That's basic, and something every sampler/sequencer should be able to do. You can even code similar basic functionality in your web browser, or iPhone, which it seems they're doing.

Are people really not able to understand the difference between something like FL Studio and a basic sampler? Is this a fake review? How could anyone possibly say something like that? It's like saying, "This bicycle is really great! It's way better than a Yamaha FZ1." What? One has pedals, the other is a 163 hp streetbike.

A search for the reviewer gives:
http://www.myspace.com/thaghost666

There's music there, I wonder if he made it? There must be something going on here, does anyone really believe Beat Thang is anywhere near the power of FL Studio?

LOL wow... that is someone i know, who i've sold some custom production to before. he's a total beginner as far as beat making goes, and i pointed him in the direction of the virtual to try something new. i'm sure he's tried out other things before (even FLStudio), but seems to be enjoying his copy of the virtual a whole lot... sure, its fairly basic right now as far as functionality goes (for now), but for 150 bucks your getting a nice sound library and something that works a bit like the good ol hardware boxes.

so no, its not a fake review lol

i myself look forward to getting the virtual in the mail here soon. i know what it lacks, i know whats coming soon, and do believe over time it will definitely be a beast of its own :)

TWO QUESTIONS FOR BEATKANGZ:

If you are serious about including Touchscreen, will it

1) Let me zoom in/out on waveforms and adjust start/end points on waveforms with my finger? And audition the trimmed sample in real time?

2) Would the touchscreen put a lot of strain on the processor?

I just wanna be able to chop more "organically". Dont really wanna **** with numbers and dials and ish. Let me know dudes.

It won't put any extra strain on the processor.

Yes we have zoom..... And yes a touch would allow you to drag with your fingers but.....
It's a 3.5 inch screen..... And when you see how quick those knobs move through start and end points..... U ain't gonna care about touching the screen you will probably prefer not to smudge the screen. Plus you'll have the virtual so you can edit on a big nice monitor too and easily move the edited samples back and forth. Touch screens are cool but not really worth it on small screens IMO.

Yes you will also be able to hear your edits in real time.

Thank you for your reply.

I have one last question (I promise) about the touchscreen.

Would you write BTV code to work on touchscreen tablets in real time with the beat thang?

Because you're right about the 3.5in. screen on the beat thang but I would love to be able to chop up samples with my fingers on a bigger screen.

Also, since the files from the cards work in real time, then would the entire waveform of a 4 minute long wav file show up on the beat thang? And can it load mp3s?
By ONE Thu Aug 27, 2009 8:51 am
If the Beat Thang could load MP3's then it's over. Considering how many people nowadays ONLY listen to MP3's and all the cats over the years asking if MPC's could read MP3's? Sheeeeeiiiiitttttttttt Beat Thang would take over, cause NO ONE is doing that on hardware. I think the Beat Thang would really blow up if they implemented that.

please don't let let it load mp3s.. this might destroy hip hop!

what i would like to see is some synth programming options, not just preset sounds. i want to create my own synth sounds with routing to effects.

how am i able to manipulate the sounds on there?

i don't think it would be to hard logic wise to have a selection of sines/saw wavs etc(+ your own digz) with a creative analog synth style chain of processing options. just to be able to create some simple fat meaty sounds. idk eventually resample to patch feature. especially with 16 layers!!

you could develop some soft style synths for specific things and have them as loadable synth programs in the BT downloadable from your website. if that happens i get a free one though, lol.

also is there options to route channels/tracks/pads to any daw??
in hardware thru usb or in the software? like a sound card i guess..
i know you guys plan to be able to export tracks as wavs or whatever that's dope but jus icing on that..

do the pads puch like a button or are they firm like a pad? sorry never used an asrx but they like firm(mpc style?), or are they esx style button style pad... get me?

just pushing the limits with brain storming, definitely not enough of that going on around here.
dude is here with us now willing to develop a product. let's make the most of it while we can..

let's ask more questions people!

btw i think this looks aight! alot better than the proto anyways.. only things i'm not really liking are the clearish plasticy surrounds on the pots/mod & the ableton live looking os... that's why i just refunded my torq.. i think it's just the fonts that bug me, layout looks ok. maybe you could have a font change option to for the extra picky/custom options.....
Image

don't think i'm nut huggin ya or nothin.. i'm just on the fence like the beathang about to be success or be an epic fail..

hahaha I do see your point. It would make Hip Hop production more easy on people who never went digging a day in their life, but at the same time I think it would be a HUGE selling point.

Hasn't there already been enough damage done by people that don't dig though?

With all the crap music that's already out, it really doesn't matter if working with mp3's is easier or not.

theres enough of a hype to sell this to wack rich kids for christmas, let's not fuel that. idgaf anyways i'm gone be doing my own thing digging and developing my already existing style with any hardware/tools.. kids can be kids with it if they want.

they will using mp3s anyways....

I'm sure that's not to mean that only kids use mp3's but I catch your drift. If kids are going to buy a beat machine, it's going to be this one.
