How many of you buy sounds for music production.

I was just kinda curious about how many of you buy sounds from places like mpcsounds.com and the like? I used to want to but I figured I should just dig for myself. And no I don't mean sound modules

Straight up I did when I first got my MPC... I think it's weak though... It's all about personal preference, but I get more satisfaction from creatin my own sounds with EQ and Compression... I like the thrill of the hunt (if you will) of finding a really sweet break or Bass sound... And I absolutely never used Samples (meaning like Instruments) from Sample CDs or websites... The most I ever do is go to a Break site when I'm in need of some better drum sounds...

what a lot of people mis understand about sample sets is that they are useble straight outta the box...id say less than 1% of samples ive heard hae been useble without tweaking in terms of eq and efx and stuff....

for example if i want a decent mulitspanned piano ill grab one of my miroslav sets...they are quality piano's recorded in quality environments but still need tweaking to fit into the mix....and i dont know of any other way to get a full multisampled piano rather than hiring a piano/mic set/studio and spending time sampling it yourself....ditto goes for strings, keyboards, orchestral stuff....drums are far easy to find, mangle and fit into the mix but proper instruments are that little harder...

if you just trying to get into production, a store bought stash isn't a bad start

but once you get your feet wet, you should be looking at learning sound design / sampling and creating your own from scratch

creating your own sound from scratch- so say you wanna grand piano pice or a string piece how would you create that from scratch without sampling a grand piano or violin quartet?

You would have to sample it dub... But you could grab a nice sound of a string section off a record if you really needed to... Most people would use a synth or Multi-Sampled program... Only if you're doin original sh*t though... All my sh*t is sampled so I never deal with that... I'm talking strictly drums... I think people should try to create their own sound from samples... Seriously I think you learn so much more about production from takin an already finished product (Drums off of vinyl that's already been compressed) and just spicin it up with EQ, light compression, Filtering... It's just my preference...

Man listen just make music period.If you paying for records you paying for sounds.As long as the end product bangs then who cares if you bought some drums sounds from a website or if you bought a Sound Module.Just remember an MPC is a sampler get creative find ways to sample any and everything that makes sound.

I feel you Earnest... I'm not hatin on anyone who buys sounds... That's their thing... I'm just sayin as far as it goes for me... I'm explainin why I do what I do...

ah fair play...i like sampling stuff and do do sample based music but i also like to be able to control the compositional aspects meaning i like to write my own chord sequences, bass lines and arrangements rather than rely on samples....

i think you could learn just as much trying to make original sounds into something that sounds like a finished product as well as the other way around....

one thing i will say is i never pay full price for the miroslav or zimmer sets...the retail prices are overblown...

That is true... I guess I just see it the otehr way cause I know a lot of people that buy those sample packs just Load the sounds and Sequence... Some people don't take the times to thin out the sound so it fits better in the mix.... I find that with sampling you have to do that or the track sounds like sh*t, but you are right you can learn just as much... It really all depends on what type of music you're doin...

thing is though matt we can hear that...if i played a tune of mine where i hadn't fitted say my piano sound in the mix it is ooo obvious and you'd notice straight away...the sonic signature of these excellently recorded instruments sticks out a mile from the rest of the tune.......so i for one spend (probably too...)....much time getting the fitted in sonically....specially for hip hop beats where you need that extra layer of grime...

I used to do that on occasion, buy sounds, and I still do once in a while. Main thing is I shop for sounds I lack, and I like the hihats that I get off disc, they have a certain quality that I usually don't get when I sample hats off vinyl. Plus it makes a nice variation to have a crisp clean hat with a dirty grimy kick and a filthy snare behind it.
