Hey Guys just a quick question i never really knew what the assignable outs were used for on the back of the MPC 2000...so yeah i would love to hear from you guys to see if you know what it is/does or if any of you guys use it at all...you know

You can assign 1 or more pads/sounds to each indiv. out for tracking into a daw.

yup....With a decent analog mixing board, you assign the sounds out the 8 outs and then instead of using the mix screen on the mp, you use the mixers faders. Its like adding hardware volume/eq control to the mpc.

I had the 8 Out in a 2000XL and a 4000 at one time.

With the new 4000 and 2000XL's I have, after years of using these things, I don't bother with the 8 Out anymore.

I don't like having to go through and assign the outputs of individual tracks to individual outs,
and still having to mute tracks beyond the 8 available outs.

Most my beats are over 10 or 12 tracks anyway.... so I end up muting.
If it were 16 outs, then I'd use it, but if I'm gonna mute anyway, it kinda defeats the purpose.

I stack snares, hats, kicks, etc in many cases, but not on the same track,
cause I want them seperate - tracked out - for WAY more detailed processing and resolution in Pro Tools.
This creates a higher track count than the available outs.

I also do all my arrangement in Pro Tools, rather than on the MPC.
So I just build my 16 bars, with everything I intend to use in the beat,
then I sync with Pro Tools, 4 bar count in for rock solid sync,
my Control 24 handles transport for Pro Tools and the MPC,
and I drop my 16 bars, one track at a time.
This only takes me a few minutes.... it's really fast.
Then I trim the tails to grid, duplicate my regions out as far as I think I'll need it,
(Slip things accordingly, if needed.... I hate the MPC's swing. Too mechanical. Much prefer the swing of the RS7000)
and then do my arrangement.... removing what I don't want in certain sections,
do my builds, fades, sometimes chop things up a bit for fills/breaks, drops, mixin/mastering, etc.
I find all this far more friendly in Pro Tools than in the MPC's......

Because I work like this anyway, it doesn't make sense to spend $200 on an 8 Out that I won't use.

Same goes for the Effects cards. Had those too, but would never use them in production,
I much prefer the quality of my Waves bundle. Much much higher quality than the EB16.... obviously

Now, if I were to use a MPC for Live application/performance, both of these would make sense,
but in a studio environment, their application is kinda pointless for me.

to each his own

The 8 outs are assigned by snd not by track. You could make a whole beat overdubbed on 1 track and still separate the sounds, be it multiple snares or many samples, to different outputs. Number of tracks utilized has no effect on functionality of the 8-outs. For someone who doesn't use the MPC as their main sequencer I could see why assigning sounds to outs would be time consuming. When you have a complete track created in your MPC the time it takes to assign your sounds to each output is well worth it.

Wow... something I have drastically missed/overlooked for some time.

I'll have to play with one again.........

drrrrrrrr

But this still limits how many INDIVIDUAL sounds I can keep isolated at one time. Same issue.

Still stuck droppin limited number each time.

If I have 16 sounds/tracks being used, I can't track them out, seperately, at one time with the assigneable outs.....

Just doesn't do it for me.... :(

Not saying it isn't great. Perfect for some. Just not me...

mumkai wrote:there should be alot of info on the 8 outs in the manual and here in the search engine that you can find, but its basically its so you can record 8 tracks from your MPC to a DAW simultaneously. very valuable and killer time saver.

Actually i was not able to find more than a paragraph about the 8 outs. On page 7 of the Akai Mpc manual in the Introduction. Nothing is titled 8 outs feature or using 8 outs,or anything to do with 8 outs at all...? So the Manual once again has not answered my questions. In fact it only points out the location of the 8 outs and gives a brief synopsis. How do I learn to use it if I have never used it before? I dont even know what it is for.....Please Help!

my message you quoted says what its for. i didnt put step by step process, but what the 8 out are for. these allow you to record 8 tracks at a time into DAW (logic, pro tools, reason, cubase....calkwalk) multi track recorder, mixer for live monitoring (have to check that one to be sure) instead of limiting you to only ONE track.

okay, lets say you have a drum beat with these instruments in it:
kick
snare
high hat
tom
cow bell
ride

okay.. you make a cool drum pattern. now pretend that is your full song. your next step is to get that onto the computer to tweak it and make it sound good.

so you could connect your left and right outputs to your computer and record that.. and you will notice that when you tweak something, it does it to the entire drum pattern. for example, you add some reverb in pro tools or what ever program you use.. it adds that reverb to the entire drum pattern.

now for the 8 outs.. you can have each of your instruments going to it's own output, for example:
kick -output 1
snare -output 2
high hat -output 3
tom -output 4
cow bell -output 5
ride -output 6

and each of those outputs get plugged into your interface to your computer (one like this: http://www.presonus.com/products/Detail.aspx?ProductId=8 notice how that one has 8 inputs... )
anyways in cubase or protools, when you start recording, it wont just record the one channel, it will record up to 8 seperate channels at the same time...

now you can add reverb to just the snare, or you can add delay to just the high hat... instead of adding something that effects the entire pattern. maybe you dont want to have reverb on the cow bell but you want it on everything else.

does that make more sense?

I have an old Fostex DMT 8 with 8 ins/outs it also has a digital out 1/4'. Do you think I could use this instead and get similar results? How much is cubase? Or where can i download it for free? Do you have any recommendations? Thanks man you are the ish! I checked out that shack piss track man ,that is some creative stuff man! Keep up the ill work bro!
