No Floppy Device

I recently installed a 100mb zip drive and removed my floppy, but when I go to the load screen, I get the "No Floppy Device" message. I searched previous threads and tried everything that was suggested:

- The power is properly connected; in fact, the zip drive lights up on boot up, so that can't be it (right?).
- The IDE cable is properly seated in both the motherboard and the zip drive itself.
- The jumper on the back of the drive is moved all the way to the right, set to "Master."

Yet, I can't get the ATAPI device to show up on the load screen. Anyone know of any other possibilities or how to troubleshoot it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey, Lampdog, thanks for the response. Yeah, it's a 2000XL. How do I get to the startup page, are you talking about "SETUP" from the Load menu, and setting the "Primary device"? If so, ATAPI isn't even a scrollable option; just the floppy, SCSI, and F-Rom options show up. Please let me know if it's another startup screen you're talking about. Thanks.

but, yes, that's the correct screen you are supposed to see ATAPI as the startup device.

Like I said, if you don't see ATAPI something is not right with the device/cabling/jumpers.

Not every device has jumpers set to master, different brands are different.

Constant LIGHT ON the device means the data ribbon is backwards (if keyed u won't have that problem).

Thanks again for the quick response. I've tried out a few of the suggestions, but sadly, none of them worked. You're right though, I tried flipping the IDE, and the unit doesn't even boot up... the LCD screen lights up and so do all of the lights (and stay on), but the MAIN screen doesn't even load. I tried another zip drive that I had on hand; that didn't work. And also, tried all three jumper setting; didn't work either. Thanks for the effort, though, it's much appreciated. I'll update the thread as necessary if I have any luck in case any one else comes across this.

try booting with a zip disk in the machine... see if that makes a difference

1.14. I understand 1.2 is for the MCD drive only.

So I tried reinstalling the floppy drive and I'm STILL getting the "No Floppy Device," message. Wow, not my day. Good thing, I have an external SCSI zip drive to fall back on.

that is odd... because the zip drive and the floppy drive dont even plug into the same port.

I am starting to wonder if the OS 1.20 is actually for the atapi in general and not just for atapi CF drives.

maybe try installing OS 1.20 with the atapi IDE drive on there... obviously install it with your scsi zip drive.

Yeah, you're right, but when I reinstalled the floppy I already knew to use the smaller IDE port (as the IDE port for the zip drive is bigger anyway).

However, your OS suggestion worked... the ATAPI device is now recognized in the load screen with 1.20 installed. Though, upon booting, the "Wait..." and "detecting memory..." screen at startup took WAAYYYYY too long; I'd say about a minute or so until it finally made it to the main screen.

Nonetheless, thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps I'll try installing another zip drive to see if that's what's causing the MPC to take so long to load.
