The top hardware you can buy new is the 5000 and 2500. There are other threads about these two in general, but this one is about the firmware.

Akai has such a poor history regarding their recent firmware releases that it may be a disqualifying factor that the 5000 doesn't have a 3rd party OS.

Please share information about how the Akai OS on the 5000 and JJ OS on the 2500 compare in real-world workflow. Which do you prefer and why?

There are some differences in features, that the other OS doesn't have, but what's really important? What are the small things that make one better?

I have had the privledge of comparing the two since I have a 2500 with JJ and my buddy has a 5000 with 2.0 in it.
there is no comparison in my opinion considering everything about JJ is making workflow easier and faster, and the 5000 feels nothing but SLOW to me.
Even the basics of loading and saving.. just TOO DAMNED SLOW

and for the few features gained with the 5000.. the ONLY one I miss is that big ass screen.
Now gimme JJ for the 5000.. and then I would be jealous.

Thanks for the opinion. Having never used either, I just read both manuals, and what you wrote seems to be true. Just the ability to assign shortcuts to the numeric buttons in OS2XL alone is a big point for JJ.

Everything seems to be more thought out in JJ OS, with more attention to detail. The 5000 firmware appears to be basically the same as the 500, except a larger screen, graphical grid/piano edit, and a synth/multitrack recorder.

It looks like the top MPC is actually the 2500 + JJ OS. Purchase a separate synth and multitrack recorder and you've got a complete setup, with faster workflow than a 5000. Akai should upgrade the MPC specs, and rehire JJ.
