Audition a program/folder

Can you highlight a folder or program file, press something, and hear it like you can with samples?

sounds like youve thought about it... but you havnt tried...

if you have tried, you probably already know the answer.

That was a useless response. I don't have access to a MPC with JJ OS to try.
If you can't, that feature should be added.

Mr Inventor, before you come and by the sounds of it demands a function I´m curious to how you've imagined this function would work.
Say I have a folder with a project saved, say I highlight that folder, then press something to hear "it". How should the folder then be auditioned?

A: Should it play the entire project as it's laid out with all seq's and possible arrangements in Song mode? Should it play the first bar of the first seq?

If you think about it, the above is obviously impossible and in most cases useless if you have a properly named folder.

B: Should it just play the samples in the folder? In that case, should it play only the first sample, or all the samples one by one after each other? Or just blurb 'em all out in simultaneous honk?

What do you gain by this? How does this improve the workflow? Isn't a somewhat neatly named, logical and tidy file structure on whatever media you use a much more efficient and easy way to navigate and keep your files in check than a lot of folders that need to be auditioned to know whats in them?

If it's a program file, parse only enough to get a .wav filename and play that.
If it's a folder, list only enough to get a .wav filename and play that.

Names can't accurately describe a sound. Presets always have useless names like, "Pimp Bass". Do you know how that sounds based on that name?

I don't even bother to name my instruments, it's impossible. I just have folders like, "bass004". I want to be able to hear them like samples.

Also, there should be an option you can quickly toggle to turn on/off auto-playing of the selected folder/file so you don't have to hit a pad.

These little things make workflow so much smoother.

For the way I work this feature wouldn't be that useful as I create all my programs for each project. With JJ it is so quick and easy to navigate through folders to audition sounds that I think you may be highlighting an issue that doesn't really exist.

In saying that, a quick workaround may be to use the 'record main outs' function for each program to record a 2 or 4 bar section. You can then find this mixdown in each program folder, and if for example you name it 'AA Mixdown' it will always be very close to the first file in every folder.

It won't hurt anyone who doesn't use it, as to them it'd work exactly the same. It's mainly for instrument programs. If you have 100 different piano sounds, and are looking for the one that fits your song best, you have to go into the folder of every piano program, select a .wav, and preview? It'd be much faster to be able to do it from the root folder, just moving down through all the piano folders until you find the right one.

Well it's 2 or 3 extra button pushes per audition, which over 100 programs adds up to quite a lot, I agree.

Maybe this is the route of your problem? I know my own file system needs some tweaking, but thankfully it can all be done from my pc. Sometimes connecting the usb and managing files from there is way easier.

so use ableton live for this way of doing music....
with the first mpc i had (1000) i used to emulate the way i was doing music with the computer... so i would like to make something like: make a beat, tryng 32545 kicks to find the one that fit well...


well i was out of the mpc point....

you are limited with this machine... it's not the way u are trying... use computer to do that "way"

here u choose sound... u decide in your mind what is best and what is not... them u play... of course u would try different sounds... but i can se u came from computer and u are still thinking like that.... use computer to do music in that random way.... with mpc u can get a step higher.... and remember the music u love from the past? well they have 20 sec mono or similar.... and nothing like this... use mpc in that way... and when u will back to computer u will never feel the same... at least here...
