Looking for a low-noise fan

Hi

Just bought a used MPC-4000 and looking forward to work with it. I find the fan very distractive though and would like to replace it with a low-nois one. Can you please recommend one for me?

The 80GB harddrive itself makes a lot of noise too. I have just ordered a SATA to IDE adapter in hope that I can use a 60GB SATA drive I have available. Do you know of any issues with such an adapter?

Is the 80GB drive internal? Whats the max amount that can be installed on the 4k?

In terms of maximum HD capacity for the MPC-4000. I have read that the MPC itself can only format hard-drives up to 120GB but if you format the it on your PC then the limit is 2TB (I can't remember the exact numbers sorry). I you decide to format a HD on a PC ensure that you format using FAT32.

How many slots available on the 4k for HD?

Get a SSD, completely silent.
Open the MPC4000 and see where the fan is positioned. Why is it there?
Maybe it's something unnecessary like for cooling the HDD, in which case you can safely unplug the fan.
But if it's for some kind of processor, get a temperature reading with and without the fan during normal use.
It might be that it can run fine without cooling, and at worse might only shorten the life a little.
If you find it requires cooling, check the fan size, and order the best one you can find. Then add a control so you can slow it down to the minimum speed required to cool in your environment.

I don't know ....have only had the mpc for 3 days and haven't had time to figure that out. Good question though.

Early production runs of the MPC4000 (white ones?) had an fan which was loud enough to be annoying.

Some of us (myself included) managed to replace it with a silent fan
(by reading the fan specs from the MPC4000 service manual,
and getting a suitable replacement.)

There is an old thread on here somewhere with all the details.

I might add that it was quite fiddly to replace (I had to use a hacksaw to get one of the screws off!)
and ended up giving myself a very painful electric shock from a capacitor on the PSU board whilst
trying to get the fan connector plugged in the right way.
But it was worth it to get rid of the bloody fan noise!

I have an MPC4000 (white) without an internal HD, and the fan is noisy all right. So I don't think ther's any relation with the HD...

i jus use a q/tip clean around the fan when u open it up
some one will experimnt wit s$%t and find out wat fan we can put on more weed for the
experimenter...

Just putting this up for anybody looking to do this mod and also wanting the QUIETEST solution.
Looks as if this "NOCTUA NF-R8" fan has the BEST specs.. This post was taken from a thread in the MV forums:

"Those fans really aren't as silent as they advertise.

NMB Tech (original MV 80mm)
Speed 2,200rpm ± 10%
Noise Level - 26 dBA ± 10 % -

ZALMAN ZM-F1 led in noiseless mode
Speed - 1700rpm

* At full power(12v) the Zalman is louder (34db) than the MV's factory fan.

Noctua NF-R8 - at only 7v in Ultra low noise mode
Speed- 800 RPM
Noise Level - 7db

About the numbers - Even at less than half the speed of the othe two fans the Noctua destroys both in terms of both noise and airflow. So just because a fan is marketed as silent , it doesn't always pan out in the real numbers. I would skip the bling "

Just put in a 60mm Vantec Stealth. Last bit of fiddling after putting in an SSD, and pad corx (which needed a ton of sanding) edit: emailed mpcstuff.com about when they were going to offer wood side panels/armrest for mpc 4000 (coming late '10, hopefully), mentioned having to sand down pad corx, he's sending me the revised ones with the correct thickness! they're good.  

You will have to splice the red and black wires onto the old plug and snip off the yellow wire (for the speed control) to get this to work. Also, as stated above, the screws have threadlock on them so I very carefully burned that off with a lighter before unscrewing. (not for the faint of heart) And be careful not to touch any capacitors!  The mp4k is completely silent now. No vibration either. I have a white one from 2002.
