Blue, I've been using Midi and making beats for years. Its just the MPC I cant get my head around.
I've already read the above article (and most of Tweaks stuff) like years ago, don't remember it having any info on how to use synth via MPC4k but I'll give it another crack and see if I get anywhere.

What?

Wouldn't have been here talking to you if I was intellectually gifted now would I?

The mpc is like your computer it is your main midi sequencer not audio you have to record the audio either into your DAW or a multitrack recorder. This is basic midi on hardware there isn`t a hardware device that does what you were asking hence everyone refer you to do a refresher course with tweak or basic midi guide. I take it you have been doing alot of work in Audio/midi DAWs so this wasn`t known to you. But it is standard working with hardware to route your audio to a mixer or soundcard to hear it not into another midi unit unless you are sampling the sound not recording beats.

What?

Like I said before you can come back here three months later and laugh at this after learning hardware midi basics and show us what a talented producer you are. No one expects you to be a midi genius out the box but you must master and understand it to work with midi gear or how else will you make that next musicial masterpiece you are overeager to make but, impatient to learn the gear.

Head over to the recommended site it really helped me and I think we all are sure it can help you.

If you mean you want to sample sounds off your synth to use in the programs in the 4k then that is a different story. You only sample the audio not midi that doesn`t exist. But if you are recording arps or a midi loop from your synth it is better to sample it as a audio phrase like a loop off a record. My two cents.

I'm not trying to record audio. Just the midi singles from a synth, like you do with a soft synth in cubase, etc. Can this not be done with hardware via midi?

Yes I've mainly been working with Audio/midi DAWs.

So what you're saying is that the only way to use my hardware synths is to sample them as audio!?

Not sure what you mean by "midi not existing".

I think you mean notes from your synth`s sequencer or arpeggiator then run your midi out of your synth into the mpc input I or II to record. You got to remember you have to generate the notes somehow by sequencer or arpeggiator or keyboard controller. Read up the midi thread as I`m out of here after this.

No what I`m saying is the easiest way is to use what you have a sampler-sample the synth`s sounds and sequence it or connect your mpc as the master to your synth and make sure you are recording the audio to a DAW or multitrack to mix. It is kind of redundant to record your synths midi data to a midi track on the mpc and back out to the synth!! Where else it is going to go??? Study the guide it is up to you to learn.

There is no hardware unit that does what you are talking about. Figure out how it works first then do what you want after you got the basics down.

I`m out. The rest is up to you.

Peace out hit that thread and Read the Manual no shortcuts. We all did and so should you

Midi out mpc4k to mid in synth. This will enable 4k to control synth.
Midi out synth to midi in 4k, this will allow 4k to record synth performance.

Does the synth sounds you wanna hear/record reside IN the synth, then synth audio out to mixer/soundcard/interface.
You can still record synth performance into a 4k midi type track.

Is the synth ONLY a midi controller (no audio out)? The actual sound(s) associated with the performance u wanna record is within the 4k itself? This would mean, again, that you record the synth midi performance into a 4k midi type track. I'm not really proficient with my 4k yet but I understand the overview (previous 8 yr 2kxl owner). You gotta check the manual to see exactly what menus will get you these results big dog.

Done.

This part confuses me. Why do I have to deal with the audio if I only want midi?
Wont I be able to record midi signals in MPC and hear it from MPC's audio out, headphone, etc?

Lampdog wrote:Is the synth ONLY a midi controller (no audio out)?

No it contains sounds and as well as being able to act as a controller.

It does have an audio out. I've made more than a handful of beats by sampling via the audio outs.
But I'm looking to use midi in order to have more control over sounds, similar to recording midi on DAW.
Can this be done?

Lampdog wrote:The actual sound(s) associated with the performance u wanna record is within the 4k itself?{/quote]
No its in the synth, the mpc doesnt have any sounds.

Been going over the manual during the past 3 days or so. Really not clear enough.

I appreciate the help fam thanks.

If sampling is the only option it offers then yeah, guess it'll go back to being a toy sitting in the corner of the room collecting dust. Or might just shot it off.

Simple question for a simple procedure I'm sure, yet you rather flirt with me than help me out.

i guess you rather it in ignorance, than read the manual.

it tell you every thing you need to know. even has a diagram of how to set it up.

good luck

Nah just you not helping. Others have been more than helpful.
What are you talking about? I got the manual open as we speak, with the mpc switched on buzzin over my head.

Coulda helped me out instead of typing all that.
