I'm not mad at him for my usual reasons.

I just chopped up "Cause I Love You" by Lenny Williams and was so hyped on how the beat was coming out. So I called my housemate into the room and was like "yo man, you gotta listen to this sample im using!" So he starts listening and hes feeling it, but then hes like "...this sounds like Overnight Celebrity." So I say "What?".

Somehow i've never heard the song.

A short trip to YouTube later and im devastated...

So here I am venting. I guess I need to learn to check the-breaks.com before I chop shit up.


I know this has happened to a lot of you...im about to try to fix this by making a banger out of something unflipped...wish me luck.

This has happened to me more than a few times. The only thing I think of when it does happen is "at least I know I'm on the right track" (no pun intended).

I flipped the Carl Douglas "Dance The Kung Fu" sample Primo used for the Classic (Better Than I've Ever Been) Remix like back in '99, almost identical to the way it sounds on the record. It was my homie's record and he bought it to the crib for me to make him a beat using Kung Fu Fighting. Meanwhile, I kept tellin' him, nah this one was the heat and he was only halfway feelin' it. Still wanted the Kung fu Fighting beat.

Same thing with Art Farmer "Soulsides". Found it in mint condition in the trash, and flipped it in like '93 on a Tascam 8 track, and a cheap Digitech 7 second sampler/reverb/echo chamber. In 1995 Kool G Rap came out with 4,5,6 and I put the vinyl on and as I'm listening to the first cut, and reading the credits, I noticed the sample was used for one of the songs. I immediately had to go to that song, and sure enough he used the sample. But to this day I think my flip came out better because I used the original horns and had them stretched, and echoed for the chorus, where as his beat used horns from somewhere else that don't match the beat imo.

I could go on about other gems I made beats for that other artists (De La Soul, Mobb Deep, etc) later made records to.

haha, I always LOOOOVED that Art Farmer sample and, yeah, i always thought those horns didn't quite fit

Lenny Williams Cause I Love You ? Your kidding me right ?
One way to avoid that is to look for more obscure samples . That song was already a hit and it still is today . Check out what Havoc did with it on that Mobb Deep album from 02. The deeper you dig the safer you are ....................... Specially nowadays

Some samples are used or flipped multiple times. Nothing wrong with that I guess. Or it must be exactly the same when ur producing a major production.

I don't understand the point of this, people act like they never sampled anything that isn't the deepest most rare dig ever to be dug. Obviously its not the rarest shit and thats fine. What pisses me of is never having heard the songs that sampled it, flipping it, loving it, then finding out that it had been done almost identical already.

The Lenny Williams joint IS a dope song to sample from dont get me wrong , but what I'm saying is you should not be suprised . I think Scareface and them used that too . Check Talib Kweli "Rock On "
