Propellerhead Record!!

I sat through a demo of Record at their Producers Conference with Hank Shocklee a few weeks back. Man, forget VST's. This app is amazing. Just being able to time stretch an entire track like you do in Ableton without affecting pitch is brilliant. Being able to jam 20 takes on an 8 bar loop and comping the best parts is a dream. I think the name says it all. Its a Recorder. For playing in parts live is where I think its best. I'm planning on buying Record.

BTW, it actually doesn't use ReWire to connect to Reason. If you have Reason 4 or higher its fully integrated into Record once you install. No ReWire.

I was excited before the demo & now am convinced its what I've wanted for a long time. I'll keep Ableton, but Record is what I'm going to be using most.

for the boyz trippin on using vsts, here a lil bit of a work around. me and a guy from fp was talkin about it but i havent got around to tryin it, but it should work.

first you gotta have a vst that the standalone app.

second you gotta have a soundcard/interface with at least 2 sets of outputs.

so you open your vst, and in the settings make it output to the second out (ch 3&4). your first output obviously should be to ur monitors. next take 2 short audio cables and run the from your outputs 3&4 into you inputs 1&2 (or any open inputs). open record, add a track, select your inputs, enable the monitoring feature, and VIOLA. you should hear sound, now just arm the track and hit record.

that is rediculous. the easier work around would be to launch cubase or fl studio with rewire that is hosting the VST pluggins... unless they have the possibility to record certain channels internally.

WORD! I just went to the producers conference this past weekend in SF and RECORD is the Ish! You have to remember that they made Record to make work flow easier for everyone. They have built in Guitar and Bass Amps ready for the Guitar or Bass, Dude had a complete sequenced DJ show in a RECORD session and dj's all his events with Record. It's rediculous what you can do with it. What sold me was the time stretching. They literally were bumping songs from 95 OG bpm's to 105bpms with little to no difference in sound qulaity, I saw it and heard it with my own to two eyes and ears. Never thought that would be possible but they did it.

There was a recording engineer there who records live sessions onto protools...He's been doing for 15 years. He said he's heard every SSL there is out there and he says it's pretty on, and it sounds good. Propellerhead gave him RECORD for the first time and gave him 4 hours to do a basic mix on an old funk song and you can hear the difference for sure. I got names I can drop on my note book from the conference.

it's gotten to a point where hearing the difference is not a huge issue when it comes to software... now it is hardware that plays the biggest role. interfaces and etc...


hearing of every ssl that existed means what when it comes to what a DAW can do? nothing much. Oh, and SSL pluggins for DAWs are VST standard... they sound pretty damn good too.

Can I midi sync and track out my beats i made on my MPC 1000 into Record ?

well I think the point is variation. I personally dont always like sitting there to see how much I can make out of the same virtual synth. that is why reason gets old faster then other DAWs. I love the system, I love getting to play with the wires, I hate the playlist page, but I love the colours and look of the rack etc... they should do something about allowing 3rd party stuff.

record blows me away. for people who consider themselves artists before audio engineers, but still want the flexibility of a huge studio setup.. it's the all in one box. one stop shop. if you're trying to make new pop music, i wouldn't use anything else.. $$$

so guys, record has been out for months and months now....


what's the verdict?

-solidity (reliability)
-ease of use (shortcuts, drawing/cutting tools etc, misc features)
-cosmetic (looks, and vibe of the program)
-connectivity (setting up the soundcards and control surfaces, linking it with reason and rewiring it to stuff, etc)

rock solid
easy to use
fun even.

i love record. it is rock solid. i think the sound is better then just reason by itself. it has some of the best effects. i can hook up a guitar, or a bass and sit for days playing through the effects. i can go on and on. the only gripe i have is on start-up you either need ur dongle, or internet verify, and that get old..... verdict is record is great.
