AGAIN:

Buger Kangs have their own site and their own boards...why is their "Marketing Director" even posting here....Because they have NO budget so they are still relying on the viral campaign to scrap up pennies to push an incomplete product

Just by Nadirs post I can tell he is either A. No brighter than his business buddies or B. the same old "Kangs" with a different screen name trying to pull the wool. I mean if the dude was a REAL marketing director there would be no need to even have the following statement "even when you're HATING on us" anywhere in his post. Why not address the specs of the gear and keep it moving. When you are doing the right thing there is no need for an explanation. This post seems like they are second guessing their initial approach...all that bragging, and online sh*t popping and doing diss tracks and what not...that dug a hole for the company.

Well, Problem, we are a small company. We've got guys who work the viral campaign for us, but, AGAIN, we feel it is important for us to interact with potential customers on forums from time to time.

We can address the specs for sure, but where you'll really get a sense of how well Beat Thang Virtual works is if you PLAY it. You guys didn't attack the specs, you attacked the marketing.

We're not second guessing our initial approach. We KNOW we got some things wrong. We're not too big to admit it. Now we're here doing our best to fix it with you guys, the core users.

But yeah, some of you guys are hating because you don't like the marketing. I can take that. Maybe the product isn't for you. Maybe the product is for you, but you don't like the way we're selling it. Either way is fine.

If you play the Thang and you don't like it, that's one thing. If you don't like us because of the way we talk and dress, that's another, but don't get the two twisted.

And perhaps I'm "no brighter than my business buddies". I happen to think they are extremely intelligent dudes.

We can admit that we've made some mistakes. Intelligent people do make mistakes from time to time.

But I'm definitely another person. If you want to know about me, Google me. But I'm here representing the Kangz, and yes, I'm speaking for the company.

So I'm finished talking about that other nonsense. The sitcom is over.

You guys wanna talk specs? You wanna talk gear? You wanna talk MUSIC??

Let's talk.

Any good leader knows that they represent their company. When no product exists the faces of the company are responsible for ensuring the general public can be confident in what they have to offer. I mean sh*t you guys are asking for money in advance for a product that doesn’t exist yet…. The “Kangs” missed the mark on that. See you may have a small following of cats but the truth of the matter is that the damage has been done. Sure you might have a few of young cats with no money ready to jock that “thang” but most of them might be broke… The videos will have yall shouting out that its an MPC killer because well….its your video….the cats like FORUM MEMBERS who have already proven that they will invest in their craft are the ones you guys should have focused on. Instead when we came with criticism you guys popped sh*t, did diss tracks and tried to down right clown members (may I remind you that this took place on the MPC forums not the kang boards)…….I call that a fail….you wanna know why…because if the “Kangs” would have took a few minutes to search the pics of your cribs threads you would be able to get an approximation of how much the average MPC-Forums member was spending on their setup. You would also be able to pin point other strategies…but its not my job to tell anyone that…I will tell you this…it would have been SMARTER to say that it can integrate rather than replace…For a die hard MPC user your door is shut…and people like myself who are open to other gear are not going to support you because of the way you treat potential customers. Now I personally am not hurting for my bread. I'm no rich guy but I am FAR from hurting….a stack is really nothing to me…but I won’t be spending it on Kangs gear. Why would I want to do that? So that if I dislike it and have a customer complaint I can have the CEOS talking sh*t about me? Phuck that….I can go on for days about this but well…what can I say that hasn’t been said already….lol…

Every time I see them write, "if you aint up on thangz", I hear Snoop Dogg from Still D.R.E. singing that line.

It's interesting how after one image seems to be failing they can bring in someone else who represents a different style.

There's nothing real about any of this. Hip hop is fully matured, packaged, and sold. It's time for a new flavor, this gum is stale.

Yes, that's the Snoop song to which we are referring. Glad you caught that.

Each of the Kangz and everyone who works for the company is an individual, so we have different "images" and personalities. You'll see that in our writing. We're not some nameless, faceless corporate entity. We're real people just like you.

Jamon wrote:
I know Nadir's post wasn't directed at me, since I have no problems with the Kangz image. But it changes nothing technical.

The fact is, the Beat Thang is a PC running software built on the Juce framework. I think that's great, and hope they publicize Linux, Juce, and LADSPA, thanking the open source community for making their product possible.

But it means that it is not like an MPC and never can be. There's nothing wrong with that, a lot of people like PC-based gear.

To me though, it cannot be as solid as an MPC in a typical studio environment. The MPC can theoretically respond faster, and more consistently, to control external MIDI gear, and feel faster to work with because of low internal latency.

In reality, I've never measured the MPC. For all I know it has sloppy timing, and more latency than the average PC. But I have measured PC software, and know what the shortcomings are.

Regardless of the Beat Thang image, which can change at a whim, the technology cannot change. It is PC software, on a slow PC. It does have latency, and I suspect more than an MPC.

I'm not a tech dude. I'm a musician and a marketing guy (and according to you guys, not a very smart one), but I'm not having an issue with latency on my Beat Thang Virtual. I'm getting none when I bang the computer keyboard and none when I'm using a midi controller.

If you experienced latency on your machine, perhaps you should check your buffer size. I've got no complaints at 512. If you're talking about "theoretical" latency, I can't answer that. I'm a musician. It sounds good to me.

Jamon wrote:
That doesn't mean the product is worthless. There are things about the Beat Thang that give it potential to do stuff an MPC never will be able to.

But that is the problem, they are marketing this as an MPC competitor. It even looks like a MPC, with those same function buttons below the screen.

The Beat Thang is competition for the MPC. Again, some of you cats will never give up your MPCs, just like if you had asked me a few years ago if I could think of a better setup than Nuendo 2 and Reason running in Rewire, I would have called you crazy. That was my setup, and I did some of the best music of my life on that system. Then I upgraded to Nuendo 3 and Reason 3 and it all went haywire. But that's a different story.

The point is The Beat Thangz (Virtual and Hardware) offer similar features to an MPC just like NI, Roland, MOTU and other companies offer alternatives. Play the Thang, and decide for yourself. We give you similar functionality, a nice work flow, an easy to use interface, and a kick azz library of sounds. Sample, sequence, (autochop, time stretch and vst coming soon).

But I'm a musician. What I like about the Thang is how easy it is to make music. I don't have to be a rocket scientist or computer programmer like you guys here. I write songs, and I want to get the idea out as quickly as possible. Beat Thang Virtual let's me go for it.

Jamon wrote:
If you handed me Beat Kangz Electronics, the first thing I'd do is cut out most of the fluff and streamline the software to do 1 thing very well.

The price would be slashed to $699, and I'd get rid of the iPhone / Virtual, keeping only the hardware. Then I'd get them shipping soon.

Next, I'd setup a community website, with source control. Multiple dev kits would be released, and the only official app would be the basic one.

The basic app wouldn't do much at all. It'd make the machine just like a ROMpler. You select sounds, play them, and it can record/play a sequence.

The public would invent the rest. They'd share and develop multiple versions of software that can be loaded onto anyone's machine for free.

That's the power of PCs. That's why we put up with latency and other problems, because of that diversity. Without that, why bother?

Soon the Thang would be running apps that make it a synth, beatbox, FX unit, you name it. It'd be a powerful little swiss-army knife.

People with MPCs would even buy one. You can use the better software for faster sampling. It can automate lots of repetitive tasks.

The screen is better for waveform viewing, it can create lots of samples easily, and someone even wrote an app to export Akai programs.

Then you can even plug your MPC into it, and it can read it through USB, and auto-copy your stuff over to your MPC for use there.

Instead, the Beat Thang is over $1,000, trying to compete with what it is physically impossible to compete with.

The only way to win is with marketing tricks, which we are getting better at seeing through thanks to the enlightening power of the internet.

You have some interesting suggestions, Jamon. Unfortunately, we haven't found a way to lower the price point, but the Beat Thang offers a lot more than your theoretical machine (let's call it the Jam One) does.

First of all, we put a lot of time and energy into doing some hardcore sound design. That's something most manufacturers don't do. That happens to be one of our strengths, so we went with that. We did the heavy lifting so you don't have to.

But feel free to use your own sound library. Simply drag your kits, sounds and instruments into the Beat Thang data folder, and you've created your own Thang.

We do have an online community. We're still ramping it up, but it's gonna be a beast. You'll be able to do just about everything you listed and more. Feel free to join our community. Soon you'll be able to trade custom kits, sounds and tracks with other Kangz and Queenz in the Kangdom (I know. You guys HATE IT when we use terms like that! You can just be a "user" if you like.) That's down the road a piece. We've got other work to finish first.

The Thang has synths, beatbox and an FX unit. You're describing the Beat Thang, but where you would put the work off on other users, we did the work for you. That way guys like me, who are not computer programmers, can still work with it RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX!

So if you'd like to call the Beat Thang a "Swiss Army Knife" of beat making, I won't be mad at you. If you prefer to do your sampling on an MPC, you can do that, and still drag your files over to the Thang. No fuss. In fact, you'll want to put those sounds on the Thang because, unlike the MPC, the Thang has virtually NO LOAD TIME.

We could go on some more, but I've got to pack for a flight in the morning. (Any of you guys in Atlanta? Catch us at the International Soul Summit at the Renaissance Hotel, or come and catch my showcase at Apache Cafe on Friday night.)

I hope this helps to answer some of your questions. I mean, we can talk theory all day, but you'll see the difference when you USE the Thang.

Get your copy of Virtual if you'd like to try out the GUI before the hardware comes out. The interface is identical, and anything you do on the software will be transferable to the hardware. And it's only $149.

Thanks again, fellas!

Hey, Pound, those are points well taken. And that's why I'm here to admit that we made some mistakes in the beginning. I didn't write those forum posts, but as marketing director, I'll take the heat for them.

And to be fair, there was some baiting going on. Some cats were trying to start a flame war, and it worked. We're not proud of that, that we got sucked in, but again, part of being MEN is that we admit our mistakes, change our ways, and push forward.

We're aware that we may have burned some bridges with potential customers like you, and that's unfortunate. That's why we don't work that way anymore. I hope you'll change your mind about working with Beat Kangz gear, especially once you get an opportunity to play our Thangz, but if you don't, I have nothing but respect for a man who sticks to his principles.

We are no longer taking money up front for the Beat Thang. We'll take your pre-order, which means we'll put you on the list. Then we'll notify you once the Thang has shipped, and send you one of the first run Thangz.

Thanks again for your sincerity. Peace!

I don't think they did much damage. If you put things into perspective it seems that this forum and the people with hardcore home setups like we see in those pics are very rare. They are a minority of a minority of a minority. Most people looking to buy the Beat Thang will never read anything posted to this forum. It might as well be private or not exist.

Think about it, a young person concerned with image, wanting to join the hip-hop community, will go to his local music store with his mom. He's never heard of a MPC or even MIDI. There's a small room off to the side with a bunch of neat gadgets hooked up to speakers. Running lights, pads, knobs. He pushes something and it sounds like his music heroes.

Damn, that could be him! He can be like his idols. Look how easy it is too. Whoa, the "Beat Thang". That's what I want, to make beats. Look how much better it looks than that square boring thing with grey tic-tac-toe squares. The pads even light up! That's sure to get some girl's attention. Wow look at the screen! It's big and colorful, that's way better than green.

MPC-5000 has a blue screen, that might be okay, but $2k? Pshh, the Thang is half that. Then he tries them out a bit, can't get the 5000 to do anything magical straight away. It is more confusing and boring. But with a few clicks he's already got the Beat Thang making hip-hop sounds. Tap tap and there's some beatbox skills pounding out the speakers.

He can't actually beatbox. He can't actually sample drums, or sequence MIDI. He's wack. He just wants to join the culture. He wants to take it to parties. Pull this battery-operated Beat Thang with custom grill out when everyone is hanging out in the parking lot. When they're showing off their subs with LED lights, he can pull this out, plug it in, and say he's a producer.

"Wow, you made that!?" Suddenly he has attention, he feels popular. That's the game the Kangz play. That's what Aja represents. Look at his MySpace pic. Look at his wife's. Listen to the music. Watch the videos. See the parties. They are selling something other than technical tool power. They're selling the squishy emotional stuff. They're selling feelings.

From that perspective, the Beat Thang can be a huge success, and nothing on this forum will ever have any impact. You think that boy asking for a Beat Thang for Christmas is going to care what you wrote here? How you perceive the Kangz marketing? Do you think any of them even know what latency is? There's even an iPhone app. How can the MPC top that?

It can't. It was never meant to.

And the backpedaling continues.

No one who is serious about music production is going to buy that machine. Only people that will buy it are stupid kids that just want to make dirty south club type of beats and suck at it.

That thing has fisher price written all over it.

Saying the people in the pics of your cribs thread is a minority of a minority totally undermines the fact that if you go to many other forums, you will see even bigger threads with pretty much the same thing happening in them.

No self-respecting musician or producer is going to buy one of these things, especially for a G. You can cancel that.

Only people that will will most likely be dick-riders thinking that they are cool with this toy in their bedrooms.

This is NO competition for the MPC in the slightest.

Remember friends don't let friends buy beat thangz

If you have experience with most of the major sampler/sequencers, you'll understand why the Beat Thang has potential. But if all you've used is an mpc with an ugly-ass faceplate, then no one expects you to understand.

Since this is a thread about the beat thang being delayed, Nadir will you give us a more concrete date than just "Winter"?
By Jamon Wed Sep 23, 2009 1:25 am
Nah, I went to the park and pulled out my Beat Thang and they all started screaming, "Mommy mommy that's so wack!!". One lady smacked me upside the head with her purse and said, "Don't you ever expose my kids to poser-tech like that again! Next time get an MPC!".

I do want my money back though. If they aren't doing the pre-order thing anymore then they must've decided it was a bad idea. What do I get for letting them have my grand for months before there is even a product? Does that make me an investor? Do I get a % of profits?

They're still telling people to spend $150 just to try the software to see if they like it. That's beta. They should be paying people to try it and report bugs. But even if it were polished and perfect, there should at least be a free trial up by now. Nope, pay $150 just to try.
