I know because I did some work with him and the guy is a dope producer and an ever better engineer (check album credits). I am not a name dropper/bragger but from what I know about "Da Kangz", "Da Beat Thang" should be an interesting production instrument. Not sure if it will "replace" the MPC or not?
how does he actually uses it tho? i mean, just cause you use an mpc doesnt mean you use it the same way, know what im sayin? when i make keyboard beats i still use my mpc for drums and sequencing, but its differant than when i make a sample based beat. what's important is that they(beat kang designers/developers) understand the workflow of sampling, chopping, and flipping vinyl with no computer involved and the mpc - and if not the mpc, something real close - but NOT so much like a keyboard workstation. imo the fantom X, triton, and motif dont excell in the chopping samples area compared to mpcs, they have good stuff, but just not the same as mpc (i dont own an asrx/10 so im not sure about those).
plus, you can use a keyboard sampler like a mpc sampler too, or any sampler for that matter. whats important in my opinion is to make sure the BT has that good chopping workflow for sampling vinyl (as mpc do and some samplers) ya know what i mean? its cool to add other great features that software has for sampling (autochop, timestretching, dragdrop), and some of those good features keyboard workstations have for sampling (like fantomx's skip back) but i think the core workflow needs to start with or be influenced by mpcs.
features that make mpc chopping:
1.simplicty - record, adjust endpoints, assign to pad, edit pad settings, done.
2.extracting sections quickly - adjust end points, extract, assign new sample to pad - getting sample to pad quickly or swapping samples on pads quickly
3.zones/regions as on 2xl or 4000 for assisted chopping
4.zones/regions that can overlap on one sample not just even zones - like jjosxl nondestructive chop
5.preview each zone/region by hitting separate pads without having to switch zones or extracting to preview - jjos2
6.edit sample end points in trim mode while being able to hear pad settings - like jjos2 pitch setting in trim mode
7.mute groups and mono mode settings on pads
8.trim mode editing features (stereo to mono jjos, bit + sample rate convert, pitch, timestretch, extract, discard, insert, etc.)
some nice to have features:
1.auto resample pad (bounce down pad settings/effects)
2.more thoughts to come
really it boils down to getting the sample to the pad quickly as possible, adjusting/extracting new samples quickly, editing pad settings quickly. having the pad settings that make manipulating the sample easy
more thoughts to come on this point, but at work now, cant really respond more.
