Counter question

Well, just started working with my MPC2k.....without a manual no less....can't get it to download. Anyway....I'm just starting with the basic 2 bar loop.....but when I want to start recording I can't hear the counter....the first time I tried and played it back the damn thing played so fast I couldn't believe it. IF I could hear the beat counter I think that will help.....I had it turned on and I had the count in set to Rec. only and the in rec. set to "yes" Is there something else I am missing.....I'm gonna get the manual printed this week but I want to start getting the feel for this thing. Any help help and tips on making loops is appreciated....thanx,

make sure on the main screen it is set to count: ON...the hit open window on that setting and make sure it is set to metronome on (REC ONLY is how i do it, but you can do REC+PLAY if you like).

Once I do that will the counter be heard......I am running the unit through a amp speaker.....what should I be listening for......will it come on before I start recording or what? Or will it only come on once I start.

also, the metronome comes out the stereo outs.
