Hip hop isn't dead, or we wouldn't all be here. I think the problem is that like everything, hip hop has evolved, splintered and diversified. There's a dominating 'sound' in each era of hip hop, but if you dig deeper there's so many facets to each era you can't dismiss. What we know as the golden era came about from people experimenting and and pushing the sound forward. It's music that most of us grew up with, and because it sounds so **** good it created the global culture hip hop is now. This culture has been commercialized, so the sound that your average man in the street associates with hip hop nowadays is trashy MTV pop music. Real heads look at the last two years and think of stuff like Dilla, Madlib, 9th, Doom etc.

When people ask me what music I'm in to, and I say hip hop, I sometimes feel like I have to justify it - "I like hip hop but not shit like Lil Wayne and 50 Cent". It's embarrassing you know? The hip hop I listen to is so far from the 'hip hop' in the charts, it's like comparing tom waits and the beach boys.

Anyway, here's some stuff from outside of the states that proves hip hop is alive, kicking and smoking big ol blunts.

Pete Philly & Perquisite - Grateful
Tumi and the Volume - What It's All About
Sonnyjim & Kosyne - Plan B
Guts - And the Living is Easy
Supreme NTM feat Lord Kossity - Ma Benz

hip hop's not dead, it's just that hip hop that required writing is no longer played very often.

this anthem garbage is what is going on... everyone is on the same thing these days. Notice how most of these southern tracks are not structured the same way. they are 50% chorus 50% lyrics... but the lyrics are border line rhymes with no cleverness.
those songs are nice for in dance clubs, but nothing more.

80% of the southern hip hop tracks I've heard are either about swag, or you being jealous of my swag and you are hating me and my swag because I got more then you. that and cars, hoes and the usual.

so combine all that with the usual 808 drum kit, 909 kit too some times... the typical dance music synth lead sounds... some note repeat... and you have it.

there are still those real cats filling the void in the background though as there always has been. I never liked mace or faboulous or that type of stuff, but we always had gza, dj vadim and his peoples, and countless other people keeping it going.

that double barrel album my marco polo and the other dude... that is a very nice album. came our a few weeks ago.

A lot of us are getting way past the age of who music is marketed to. I really think it is that simple. Music isn't flying off the shelf as is and going back isn't going to make it stronger as a whole.

All you can do is support the artist you love and buy their albums and make music you love you feel is true to what you want to hear.

Other than that, **** it really, what can you do?

I don't think it is that per say, we are the strongest buying group out there. However, the industry as a whole has made some poor choices along with the evolving times. The records are not flying of the selves because frankly, most records are crap. They may contain one or 2 good songs and the rest is worthless. Nobody wants to buy that, really... Do you remember the last time you bought a record that was golden from cover to cover? Yep, we are at that same time period again. Also the way we are listening and consuming our music has changed, and will change even more. Nobody cares about audio quality anymore... Have you seen the bandcamp slogans/ads? for audiophiles they say, meaning standart 16bit wave files. People are just content with compressed audio formats, played using copression and EQ on a set of sub bar headphones. it's faster and we are gettnig more and more lazy. Same goes for making the music...

Before everything was global, people had to come correct to sell records, more time and energy was put in to making a quality product. Along came the internet with it's global market, the companies saw a potential to market to a wider audience. What they did not see was the fact that everyone else saw that too. And soon we were bombarded with a never ending stream of choices. More, more and faster. So you need to make the product cheaper, you need to sell it faster and you need other ways of making it stand out.

Today anything older than a week is garbage, so people push out bad product as fast as they can to atleast sell something. Make the single bang, **** the rest and hope the MTV plays will sell it. Make up a funny dance and sell it to people as something cool... All that type of ish.

Basicly it is we the consumer that is at fault. We (in general) let the industry pour garbage on us and they will continue to do so as long as they make money out of it. Like the above poster said, support your favorite artists, not the industry.

I'm not sure my ramblings made much sense, but I hope you got the gist of it.

I totally agree with you, especially this part. The industry isn't giving us much though. It seems like only 3-4 rappers can be in the spotlight at once, before you could have 30. Alot of people are working off of no budget now too. But the consumer continue to buy garbage.

There is also no need for great albums, just singles with itunes and piracy. That has been the case for awhile but I think it is at a new extreme.

Lastly, I think Hip Hop, and the music industry as a whole is in the sort of "destroy and rebuild" cycle. Old methods arn't working, new ones arn't working in varioius ways.

I also think people need to have a better distiction of 'pop music'. We will not but someone like Brittney Spears in the rnb catagory, she is a pop singer. We have all these rappers doing pop music and we still consider it rap, or hip hop. We then, subconsiously, all believe this is the route of "our" music when most of us listen to what we do because we don't like pop muisc.

Lastly, someone said this once and it struck me. They said if Illmatic came out this year, they probably wouldn't really like it. I don't know about that album for me but so many albums I consider to be "classic", and hold almost sacred to me, I just wouldn't like now. That made me realize just how much good music is comming out, it is just in a very small dosage.

Again, at the end of the day, you can either continue to do what you do, buy good music and make good music, or say **** it. I think too many people said **** it, moved on, and until the next wave of great producers and rappers really get on, we kind of did it to ourselves.

Sorry, I went off and on on your point, i have my own ramblings lol.
