Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hey guys

just needed advice. I have a card reader in my xl that ive been using for a year or so. Everything was working fine. I decided to upgrade from a 1 gb SD card to a 2 GB so i could store more samples etc.....I bought the card which seemed to be sort of cheap (kingston bootleg i believe) but it formatted fine and let me copy all my sounds over. When i put it in the mpc it didn't recognize the format so i formatted it with the MPC which seemed to have ruined the card. Windows wouldn't read it it would just say you need to format and throw an error when i tried. I'm not sure if thats because the mpc tried to make two partitions on the SD Card or what.

So after that i tried my old 1 gb card which doesn't want to read either, it just hangs at the loading screen when its reading it. I'm going to assume that might reader might be dead or something but i thought id see if anyones come across something like this.

If it is dead is there a cheap reader available online still, they all seem to be really overpriced

Thanks guys

In what file format did you format the card in your PC?

The MPC can only read the FAT (FAT16) format, and your PC cannot read cards formated in the MPC. So if you formated the card using NTFS or FAT32, then that might explain why it did not work either way.

You need to format the card as FAT16 to use it on both the MPC and your PC.

The MPC only reads 1Gb partitions, that's why it was making two partitions. But isn't the partitioning disabled in the latest OS, which you should be using to be able to use the card reader in the first place (unless it is a SCSI one)?

Maybe you should use the MPC Editor program to format your card...it works for me with no problem

I have an mcd on my 2kxl. I use OS1.14, I use 512mb CF cards, never had a problem.

Like Sab hinted at, the problem is the op not understanding formats and OS's.

OS120 cant partition. FAT32/NTFS no good for mpc.

So Lamp, you're saying 1.2 isn't necessary to run a card reader? Everything that I've read on the board has stated that 1.2 is the only way the MPC will recognize the reader. I've got an XL on the way and card reader coming in as well, and was trying to figure out a way to install 1.2 before installing the cf reader since I haven't had a zip drive in years. Thanks man.

+add to that, I use all my cf's to transfer to<-> pc. I ONLY use 8 character filenames, any filename
longer than that will be truncated (cut - down to 8 characters) and your programs and everything will not
be able to find the real names (the former long filename).

So the only difference is using OS 1.14 lets you partition and using OS 1.20 you wont be able to partition correct?

no, only mcd card readers (atapi) will work on 1.14, the cheap generic (ide) ones only work on 1.20
