Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

By Earnest Magilakutti Tue Aug 03, 2004 6:30 pm
I'm happy I got my hands on a new MPC 2000xl...I hope they don't discontinue them though because they are good pieces.I really like the MPC 4000 but it's kind of expensive to have some of the bugs that it does.Akai rushes the MPC 4000 to the shelves with a half developed operating system which to me is kind of lame and then they got the nerve to ask almost $3000 for one.You never see any other equipment manufacturer sell a half complete piece of gear do you?I'm going to use older Akai gear that they don't make anymore because they never seem to get the bugs fixed on the thing untill they are about to stop selling them.MPC 2000xl and S5000 for me untill Akai adds all the features that the MPC 4000 was advertised to have or an MPC 4000 falls in my lap.

Agreed. I know a dude who had a 4000, returned it and got another one, then ended up having to hunt for another 3000.

i got the blue 2000xl 2 weeks ago.
guitar center said that they would no longer carry them anymore.
so i got the mpc brand new for $985 out the door..
i know that guitar centers "big wigs" of the company got into a disagreement with kurzweil and they no longer carry kurzweil products.
i would say maybe the same situation is going down with akai, but they still are going to carry the mpc 1000 and 4000. so whats really going on???

i really like this 2000xl synced up with pro tools and all my synths .
i am now unstopable. forget the tritons sequencer!! its crap compared to this easy midi production center.

could the 2000xl be the next ebay gem???

on the madvillian lp, the song "bistro" has to be on a sp 1200.

Look out for Percee p coming out on stonesthrow. I read an article in here somewhere(off topic i think) where madlib is doin his beats, and gives him like 500 beats a day or something

Also, "oh no" is out soon. 2 great hip hop Lp's.

Check out "lootpacks lost tapes" which is not distributed through stonesthrow, for some reason. Its lootpack around 1993-96, madlib on the beats, all sp 1200 sh*t. I got the lp at "giantpeach.com" they are great, I also got some stonesthrow shirts etc.. You order on wed. get it sat.

anyway, support true hip hop, real underground sh*T

Why do ou say that Andreas (Bistro & SP 1200)

I have a hunch that madlib samples his old SP 1200 beat tapes into his 303, just a hunch.

"MCs need Rapping Chapstick"?

Seriously...that ish is garbage.
Anyway, why don't we just call Akai and ask them if they discontinued
the 2000XL line altogether? Although it may be true, it sounds like speculation. I know that those Beige joints have been gone for a minute, tho. That's why I was laughing at dudes on Ebay trying to sell me the beige joint saying it was 'brand new'. I'm like, dogs, they been off the assembly line for almost a year now! So, wither YOU got duped, or you tryina dupe ME. Then I heard a rumor like "Oh, don't buy the blue one cus it's now made in china instead of Japan and all the parts are cheaper and all this other crap and blah blah..."
Total crap. It's the same machine, it just looks more Kick A$$!
So, I dumped my 2000, got the blue XL and I love it.
Seriously tho, if anyone just had a baby, or is getting evicted, or has made no moves and hates the game and wants to get out, I will gladly cop your
4000 for a discount. Good day.

Yo straight up Madlib said it himself... He used the 303 to do most of his recent sh*t..... Read this quote...

"The first beats I made with the 303 ended up as part of the beat CD series that started with 100 beats. My beats on the Jaylib album cam from those CDs. So did the beats for Madvillain, Dudley Perkins, the DJ Rels album, the Wildchild album. People think I'm using the SP, but, basically, it's all about the records you use."

That's from Scratch Magazine... I can't see why he'd lie.. But it makes you wonder why he's holdin the SP-1200 on the back of the Madvillain album don't it... LOL...

I agree wit you Andreas Percee P is gonna be heat... Stones Throw is my favorite label... That Rasco joint was hot... PB Wolf always drops heat (You hear him on the Free Design Re-Designed... Fire)... Madlib and Yesterday's New Quintet is hot.. Wildchild was sickenin (especially on the beats)... Egon and PB WOlf are startin that Soul Cal label soon...

And Madlib is hands down the best producer... He can do pretty much anything... He's dabbled in Broken Beat, 12-Bit dirty hip-hop, Clean Jazzy hip-hop, Trip-hop Instrumental hip-hop, and he's plays like 20 instruments... He's a production powerhouse....

And that Lootpack Lost Tapes was fire... When you think that they were all still in high school when that sh*t was recorded is sickenin... Madlib still had that classic sound though...

Support that Raw, Real hip-hop...

Underground's been here... Underground's here to stay...

oh no doubt. But it has that 1200 sound. The 303 is pretty gritty though.
Yo thanks again for the midi knowledge!!!!

Nothing says lovin' like slappin those sp1200 buttons around. It's also the interface of a particular machine that can develope a certain sound, not just the audio converters. That being said, U can make anything sound like anything. You'd be like "Oh sh!t, I think he uses the MPC with a Nord Lead, yo!."
You may be right, you may be wrong. The thing is, once you actually know what you are doing, your ish will probably sound VERY similar from machine to machine, unless your biting someones style, like maybe for example...Madlib. Although you couldn't play me a record and be like 'guess who produced this?' and have me guess madlib, cus that's yet another sound that has been oversaturated. I would like people to climb off the crotch area of the following as well: Pete Rock, J Dilla, Timbaland, Primo, Manie Fresh, Kanye West, Just Blaze, The Neptunes, The RZA, Nephew/Battlecat/Dr. Dre, and/or anyone else who, when you play me your beats I'm just going to say: "Sounds like a beat by _____ (insert appropriate name from above)".

No hate, just something to think about. I'm sure I've got my just blaze beat, and my pete rock beat, and all that when you hear them, but, ideally, we should shoot for diversity as producers. You know what they say tho, if your gonna steal, steal from the best.

I heard akai recalled the new "blue" 2000xl for some sort of manufacturing problem, and they have completely lost their ass on the recall, which is really $ucked up if it's true, cuz guitar center and sam ash are still selling the damn thing, which is why u got it so cheap, I used to work at guitar center, and this is what one of my boys told me, but it is still hearsay.

Anyone else know anything about that? What are the chances it's true?

a lot of times people at guitar center, or any place like that, tell people rumors like it's the truth, so i wouldnt be suprised if this wasnt true, i do know that the mpc2000 have been on backorder for awhile, and will be on backorder until around the end of october. it wouldnt suprise me if this was the case tho (recall) that would explain the backorder taking so long, them fixing a problem.
the 1ks, and 4ks have been readily available, pretty much the whole time

Now you making me nervous. The Australian supplier has stock atm, so I don't know why that would be. Unless a) they're beige models, b) akai didn't recall models from australia or c) it's all shit.

Here is a response to an email I sent to australismusic.com.au

"Hello Will, The MPC2000XL is still in stock and we will continue to
stock them until we receive notification from AKAI. We have heard no
NEWS of this model being discontinued. The MPC2000XL is a industry
standard and has more features than the new MPC1000. I hope this clears
it up."
