Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By whatawreck Sat Sep 12, 2009 12:24 am
I tried a search but couldnt really find what I was looking for sooo...

Quick back story on my MPC experience, I have only used an MPC 1000 with a USB cable and a record player. It was my roommates MPC but I started sampling drums and loops from vinyl and created some music of my own.
I am now looking in to buying a 2000xl. I have heard great things about the classic sound and it is in my price range, however, I am a bit clueless about the hard drive and memory for the 2000xl.
All my drums and samples that I have used are saved on my computer. With the 1000 all I did was plug the usb cable in to my computer and drag and drop my drums or samples in to the mpc. If I created a song I would record the sequence to itself so the file would change to a wave, save it to the memory card and drag and drop it back to the computer (sorry if that was confusing but I think you get it).
Now with a 2000xl it is a zip drive, it doesnt have a USB connection, so how can get the mpc to work back and forth with the computer? How would I get my drums and samples into the 2000xl? Thanks in advance for the help guys.

use the zip drive. hook it up to the computer, transfer ur stuff to the zip drive ( or if u get a 2kxl with a CF reader, u can buy and external CF reader for ur computer)

2kxl cannot do this either, so if it was a vital part of your workflow you'll have to work around it.
Remember your taking several years steps back going to a 2kxl.

Thats the part I do not really know about. How do I "use the mpc's zip drive and just hook it up to the computer" Sorry if thats a dumb question.

Lampdog, it's not necessarily a vital part of my workflow, I just had no other way to get the sequence I had completed back to the computer. From what I know I would need some sort of audio interface or firewire in order for the mpc and my computer to interact, as in, recording a sequence directly to my software.

So I guess a better question is, If I buy a 2000xl, would I simply need an audio interface in order to get my mpc and computer to interact.

Once again thanks for all the help...

an audio interface/soundcard is what your mpc and/or other gears audio outs will go into, and the interface will route it's own inputs to software tracks in your computer daw. Every input on the interface breaks out into any track u select in your daw. The word "interact" is weird and so broad and general it can mean several different things. There are alot of words like that that confuse the hell outta alot of people, lol.

example, mpc can use internal or external card reader.
ANOTHER card reader for your computer, and you just transfer the card back and forth. Maybe your confused and thinking it's the SAME reader, no, you have 2. mpc card reader and computer card reader.
Same can be said for zip drives, you'll need 2. 1 for mpc and 1 for computer.

yeah , i dont wanna sound condescending but just to make sure , u do realize zip drives were made for computers first right ?
they were higher capacity storage before burning cds were the standard.
so, if u get a zip drive (they are still around) and use it for ur computer, and then still have a zip drive for ur 2kxl u can just swap cards like lamp said.

HOWEVER

how come u wanna go from a 1K to a 2KXL. if ur accustomed to using the 1k, i would just cop one of those. its newer technology, and more ram for more sampling time. plus no swapping cards between the 2 drives and less confusion. if ur looking for a certain sound of a machine or u feel there is a definite difference between the 2, u can always use effects either in the 1k (bit grunger) or whatever software ur using. Bottom line " u will always get of out it , what u put in"

PLUS to buy a used 1K is damn near the exact same amount as a 2kxl, withe less years used considering the age difference between the 2 of them.

Lampdog that was the most helpful post, thanks, I understand it now.

Dodgedriver I wasn't thinking of 2 zip drives, one solely for the computer and the MPC's zip. I was only thinking of the MPCs zip somehow connecting to both like LAmpdog pointed out. And ya I realize zips were designed for computers first haha.

Dodge you make some great points about the 1k. I think Im going to look in to buying a 1k for a decent price and get an audio interface so I can record tracks straight to tracks on my DAW, which would be a step up from strictly using a USB cable. Im pretty familier with the 1k, so I guess I should maybe stick to what I know a bit better.

Thanks again guys, you have been very helpful.

yeah im just in the same boots i have been using an mpc 1000 for live shows etc for over a year but have sold it to the band and i really want another machine for home/personal use but for about £350 (1k's go for about £420) i can get a 2000xl with lovely old skool pads, big jog wheel , flip screen and 8 outs, but its the ram, speed of things like chopping samples, loading and saving that im worrried about

But im lucky my friend has one so im going to go and have a go

i just made the switch from the 1000 to the 2000xl and am loving it besides a few things ofcourse

-no high pass fILTTER! i use to use that alot for layering
-to no surprize, my screen isnt perfect its got a couple lines
-its takes a while for the wave image to load up
-MONO THOSE NOT mean the samples cut eachother off, ( like the mpc 1000)
-dont know if its my OS but i cant zoom into the wave file like with JJOS ( is all good i just my ears)

hmmm  To tell you the truth if not for the classic sound and pads the xl gives i wouldnt have made the switch

yo whatawreck about half a year ago i made the switch from mpc 1000 to the 2000xl personally i would say go for the 1000 if your use to it jjos is real nice and hi filter just how j-tawn pointed out and like lamp said you cant record your output into a wav like you can in mpc 1000 and usb is also nice zips are getting alittle harder to get and more expenisve but yo if you like the 2000xl go for it personally i do not regret and love the switch as my work flow on the 2000xl is so fast maybe cause i started off making beats on the mpc 3000 and then switched to the the 2000 before the 1000 so i wanted something close to the two of them with alittle bit of new technology lol but yo you should be able to cop either one at about the same price but with either choice its a win win situation both machines are good and more then capable of making some heat on!! hope it helps! one

Made the backwards switch, used to have a 1000, just got a 2kxl yesterday, or the day befoe. Much simpler machine, it does what you tell it, and the jogwheel is a godsend. Just expect longer load times, less memory, and different "sound" as their 16 bit 41000 khz .snd audio files and not 16 bit 44.1htz .WAV PCM audio files. Much more raw sound, hard to describe. Also, no autochop or direct record, but if thse are things you can live without, its freaking amazing. I love this thing. One more thing, the 2000xl is HUGE compared to any nukai mpc, and probably twice the weight. Solid machine yo, solid. oh yeah, definately stay with a zip drive or cf slot, it takes about 10 floppies to save a program lol.

reporting back to says i just made a beat on the 2000xl and just like Tapuno if you can live with out auto chop
THis thing is pritty deadly, its wierd theres just something i love about this machine.
a great thing about the xl is that it encourages you to use poly a little more,
I just made my first beat with out haveing the samples stop after eachother, and the mesh sounds crazy.
If your Doin REAL HIP HOP then the XL tops over the 1000, simple work flow (more creativity)

I am a person who made the switch to the 2KXL from the 1K.

As much as i loved the 1K, I love the Xl that much more.

I'm still getting used to it as far as workflow, but the process is a lot more fun. I had JJ OS 1 on my 1K and it made things a too easy, so I didn't feel like I was learning anything from other than how to use the OS.

On the Xl, I'm learning more about the structure of making beats and my beats sound better than they ever did on the 1K (I personally felt that all my beats sucked on he 1K)

Now I'm making more usable beats.

I have a 2000xl SE Orange, got it from ebay. The one thing i like is the build quality and the pads are lovely. There is a definate raw sound with some 'mojo' to my ears anyway. Its a comertable machine to use due to its size. I also like the way all the controlls are spaced and positioned to the left of the pads, sound simple but it really makeds it an inspirational tool.
