loading a sample

hi i've read the instruction manual and for some reason, when i click to load a sample by going mode>load>sample and select the file, click "do it" then click the pad i want the sample assigned to, click "do it" again, my samples never stick.

am i doing something wrong?

can you tell me specifically how you are able to load a sample and put it on a specific pad?
