RZA and MP7

what up, i just got the new rza...well i guess its not so new, but i just got my hands on it. "born of a prince"

anyways, i listened to it very thouroughly. This might not be news, but he definately used the mp7 "mophatt" sounds on its production. I can hear some on every track, whether it be the snare, kick, stab, harp.

I also hear some triton piano on one, and the banger on it "get money to we fall" hes got a triton bass layered with a clav. There are a couple snares on it from the triton too (or at least strikingly similar) but definately all processed the RZA way, makes em his own. Its also very similar to "lets get dirty" from redman, and also "this is the way we floss" for the melody. from lil flip.

Im sure you probably know, but it was inspiring to me.I like to hear how he tweaked the sounds, tightened them up.My favorite is the orchestral samples on the "since i was born" one.

I also listened to the new LIVING LEGENDS "creative differances" first few tracks got triton presets all over it. R&B boost bass, Dark R&B, etc. for some bass patches....there are some lead sounds too, dont remember the names. and some pads

I love emu drums! not just the mophatt, but also the protean drums.

Yea Rza has been endorsing the MP7 for years... Ever since he switched over to Bobby Diggy he been usin that MP7 as the center of his production set-up... He did an add for the MP7 before... It was him standin on a subway train holdin the MP7... It had a quote on the bottom describing whe he liked it soo much... It's definitely a tight piece of equipment... But I don't have much use for it cause I sample almost everything...

do you think its wrong to use presets off machines? or should do you think you should always tweek?

I thnk you should do whatever works for you, but I would always try to tweak... But I mean sometimes the sound is perfect... Why should your track suffer just cause of your principles about always tweaking... I say do whatever the track calls for...

Thats why the MP7 is awesome cause you can tweak everything on there... I might pick up one down the line and use it in conjunction with Lounge Lizard and experiment with doin some original tracks...

yeah, thats why i love it.....you can tweak it so much....in all actuality the only sounds i like off the mophatt rom, are the bass and drums. very good ones....but as far as real or "usable" sounds to create melodies you need other roms. IVe been sampling loops i make on the mp7 to my mpc.

FILTERS are just great, i wish the mpc2000xl had filters like that.

Ive also got the protean drum rom. OMFG the drums are nice, layer them too you can get anything, nearly just as good as some breaks if you can sequence.

ANyways, Ive thought about it after listening to the RZA album....i mean about presets. well ive always thought that presets where lame, but like the triton, it has some presets that you can hardly get around using...like even if you layer and synthesize, youll still hear some "triton esk" quality to it.

Same with the mp7. But i think its okay if you do it like RZA. his drums are definately recognizeable, but the way he processed them makes it justifiable because they bang, and still not recognizeable in the way maybe some breaks are. SOme of them are filtered or edit via external sampler, but its not like they where just left dry.

ALSO the harp sound in track "11?", i thought about using that same sound, but i couldnt figure out how to with out getting caught; i.e. "oh you just used a preset" but he did a good job, by layering it with some more harp sounds. THe stab he used he layered it with a snare roll, and shortened it up....also sounds compressed.

BUT as far as using presets, only presets i consider "justifiable" so to speak are, drums and bass sounds. Usually because they arent too recognizable....and piano sounds. I guess it just comes with how you do it. I wouldnt complain if it was originally done in such a way you werent biting someone elses beat, or wherent using whole melodies, or preset demos or something. I will say though that even if i use a preset, along the lines of mixing or just tweaking, its not gonna be completely "preset"

i think mattmatiks hits it right on the head. anyways i can see why rza used that harp preset! i thought that shit was tight first time i heard it.

mattmatiks, i seen that RZA add, do you know where i can get that picture? i wanted to use it for a desktop pricture, and show my friends. I wish i downloaded it when it was up.

WOW i didnt know it was in the source, thats cool...i just seen it online. I cant find the "archives" of emu site, maybe ill email them. That picture always made me smile, and want to buy the mp7!

btw. if you ever want the mp7 id go to a guitar center; they dont carry them online, but at least at my local GC, they have them at discontinued prices. i got mine for 465 no tax. no box either, but it was in good shape...id check it out soon all you are gonna get are used.

Yea sorry to say the new creative differences album had alot of synth on it And they aid keyboarist to play alot of it..

thats cool. I liked it, i just noticed the synth sounds. I didnt think it was bad at all. I thought it wasnt the normal living legends. BUt thats cool cause it shows thier versitility.

Thsi shoudl be cool... Cause the I was disappointed with that last legends album... Was hoping for some classic legends sh*t...

Like Cyrus said it showed their versatility and at least they moved on to something else... Never gettin cauhgt in a rut... But I was hopin for something different...

Yea Murs and Scarub rocked an awesome set here in Philly during the DJX III tour... Scarub did some trippy a$$ double time rap over some Drum n Bass Beats... And then Murs rhymed over somDrum n Bass as well...

Murs puts on a great show... He's got a stage presence like a live Punk Rock Show mixed with James Brown...

I'll be lookin out for that track no doubt though...

i havent seen murs on stage yet....last 2 shows around me, he was out.
