Can't get Zone select to work??

I want to get the zone select feature to work on my 4k

I followed this from the manual exactly using a snare and a tom sample so each sample was dramatically different



"Switching between zones
You can use a modulation source such as velocity or control change to switch the zone
that sounds. As an example, here’s how to assign different samples to zones 1 and 2, and
switch the zone that sounds.
1. Assign different samples to zones 1 and 2 of each key group or note number.
2. In the Key Group Mix, Pitch, or Edit 1/2 page, press the [F6] key (ZONE).
The Zone page will appear.
3. Move the cursor to the Range field for zone 1, and set the values to 000–063.
4. Move the cursor to the Range field for zone 2, and set the values to 064–127.
With these settings, zones 1 and 2 will switch according to the velocity (force) with
which you play the pads (notes). This is because with the default program settings, velocity
is assigned as the modulation source that switches between zones."

This works perfectly so far.
The samples switch with velocity no problem.
The manual continues....

"5. If you want to use a modulation source other than velocity to switch between
zones, move the cursor to the Range field and press the [WINDOW] key.
The Program Modulation popup window will appear.
6. Move the cursor to an empty Source field, and select the desired modulation
source.
7. Move the cursor to the Destination field at the right, and choose ZONE SELECT
as the modulation destination.
8. Move the cursor to the Depth field, and set the value to 100.
9. Press the [WINDOW] key.
You will return to the Zone page. Now you can use the modulation source you selected
in step 6 to switch between zones 1 and 2.

I cannot get this to do anything I have tried using CC 20 as my source and zone select as my destination no joy.

tried using an LFO as the source no joy.

Has anyone got this to work??
Any ideas what I might be missing here.

does anyone know if theres any good stuff concerning the whole modulation matrix for the mpc4000....that and sysex are two features i have not really used on the mpc4000.

Yep, it took me ages to get this feature to work!

I made some programs of my analogue drum machines, sampling each drum sound 4 times,
assigning each sample to a different zone,
and trying to use the LFO on a 'random' wave form to choose a different sample each time
(hoping for a four-fold increase "analogue feel")

You gotta use Real Time and the "note on" LFO, IIRC ... even then, it took a lot of fiddling
with the LFO output depth and modulation matrix modulation amount, to get it to select each
zone with approx 25% frequency - when I made test programs with samples of me saying
"One!" "Two!" "Three!" and "Four!", I found it would keep getting "stuck" on a certain zone.

thats the nasty part of the 4k you think of something cool it should work but often doesn't or works unpredictably
