external synth?

Whats the best sounding and most advanced external synth? I looked at the Roland gear and it looks hot(phantom rack) I'm tired of Yamaha so I want something different that kicks a*s and is hopefully 1 unit high. Help me out guys :!:

I recently started to use my Roland XV-5050 alot. Roland has always made good sound modules,but they finally got it right with their XV series. The simple fact that they are the most dedicated company when it comes to expansion boards should be enough to buy one.

does the Roland gear work wwell when hooked up to the Mac OSX environment?

I really cant say. I use my Mpc for sequencing,but I'm pretty sure you wouldnt have any problems though. I know a few guys who use Logic 6 to sequence with,and they have a couple of 5080's,and I havent heard them complain.
