Hi guys,

I am just about to purchase the mpc 1000. I just need to know one thing.
Can I use the mpc as an "instrument sampler". See, right now i own a kurzweil k2000. i would like to sell this heavy dude and replace it with mpc. Now my only concern is if i could for example load a grand piano to mpc and play it via midi keyboard and at the same time play the drum tracks.
Is it possible?

Thanx for any help

yes this is possible, but bear in mind the 1k has many more 'sampling' limitations than even your lowest spec dedicated samplers (esi-32, etc) - it is really all about using a PC to do all of your editing.

thanks - i dont really need to do the editing in the mpc. I hate doing it in hardware samplers. My goal is to be able to sequence my virus c, play the "acoustic instruments" ( the grand) on mpc via the keyboard , and lay the drum tracks on the mpc. I guess I can do that all at once- am I right ?

And how long does it take to load samples (lets say a 16 MB piano from a comp or the flash card?) Few seconds or maybe minutes ?

thanks

Yup, it works, I do it with some electric piano samples (CP70, RMI Electrapiano) for that 70's feel. I wrote a little about the limitations here: http://stereoroid.com/sounds/mpc1000/faq.php#multi
- no assigning samples to ranges, each pad = a MIDI note, assigned one-by-one.
- no crossfading of any sort, but velocity-switched layering works.

Thanks a lot - It clears up a lot. I guess Ill have to get rid of my trusty although incredibly heavy kurzweil

Peace

One more thing- do i have to assign every sample manualy- if I want to load a piano that has one sample per key (on keyboard)- do I have to assign each sample to all 64 notes or does akai recognize the root of the sample and assigns it by itself ?

thanks for patiente

What i mean is - can I load for example whole akai programs without worrying about individual samples ?

Thx

No, there's isn't 1 simple solution to just load a program, or take 1 sample & shift over the whole range. You have to put in some time to make it work like that.

The MPC does not work like a full sampler. There is no way to map a sample over a range of keys, it has very limited envelopes (no filter envelope!). It has no LFOs, a non-sweepable filters.

The MPC 1000 would be a very poor choice to replace a full sampler.

Only consider getting rid of a full sampler if you can live with assigning each sample to a note manually, non-sweepable filters, a single AHD / AD amplitude envelope, and no LFOs.

Agreed - I'm currently looking to buy a real sampler, or I may get away with doing it in software on my laptop (one of the NI packs). But so far, for my limited requirements, the MPC is doing enough. The response is quick too...

Of course, using 16 notes you don't necessarily always have to assign notes to more than one pad... i went from using an MC-50 and an ESI-32 to a 1k for hardware set-up (live) and i don't miss the ESI-32 one bit, well... i do actually - but the MPC is just so get up and go it's hard not to just have music jumpin from your fingers! and it doesn't take 1/2 hour to save/load things anymore...

keep that k2000!

i sold my s3000xl with all the goodies and i miss it SOOOO BAD. i sold it for an emu vintage pro, but it just isnt the same.

the mpc1k is an amazing piece of gear, just not for doing pianos and stuff.

for SEQUENCING pianos? definitely.
