I have a 2000xl and I need sounds, I am thinking about buying a sound module and midi controller. Does anybody have any suggestions I primarily produce hip hop/ r+b. thanks TRACKMAKER

a Yamaha Motif rack if $1000 is in your budget. For the price you get twice the voices of polyphony as the keyboard/workstation and over a banks more worth of presets. And all of the same sound tweaking capabilities also. I own an EMU Proteus2500. This is a good module also with some serious patching and sound altering ability. There are tons that will get you going (like many of the roland series: JV 1010-XV 5080) but you will probably have to search for more info on these machines and possibly try to preview them at local music shops if accessible. As far as midi keyboards, I use my Korg Trinity as my controller so I don't have much info on smaller scale, midi specific controller boards. There are a multitude of hip hop heads who only use keys when direly necessary so I am certain that you will get quality info on this site about which boards work well...

I would say to give my sample Rom's a chance.
I run with a group of cats who feel that if you own a sampler- you dont need any other hardware modules (Im not as narrow minded as I love my FM synths and programming sounds) But I can give you gigs of sounds for less than what tax would cost you on a standard synth.


If your determined to get additional hardware- check out the Yamaha tx81z. I got mine for under 40 bucks and it's one of my most used synths.

I will give you a good deal on the Roms man..
Plus I have a "device rom" that has samples from 226 sound modules and synths that will turn your MPC into a monster.

Also, don't forget about soft synths. These can be a valuable source of synth sounds for all samplists and producers. The evolution series midi controllers are pretty good and provide alot of features also... I use the midiman series of controllers in combination with the evolution and while evolutions feel allot cheaper- they perform just as well.


I've only shared this with one other user on this board, but here goes:

I borrow sound modules from friends, and buy modules from pawn shops and ebay and I sample them. When finished I resell them or give them back. I can have a module sampled within 48 hours. A ton of people do this, and I suggest you start to do the same.

However, you should still start with my Roms.

What is the price of your roms? How do I get in contact with you? What do you use to sample the sound modules?i.e. MPC

By the way, I ordered Egokillas CD roms, but they haven't arrived yet. I paid like $25.00 and will get about 3 to 4 or more Cds. That's damn good. If I only get a single CD's worth of useful sounds, that's still good. (Nah. I don't really evn know Egokilla. I just happened onto his posts here and I dig his enthusiasm and his hustle. Plus he seems a little wacky, like me.) The samples available for download right here from the MPC -Tutor are decent too. You might like them. I got them. Some decent sounds. I think that's $15.00.

Overall though, Egokilla makes a lot of sense. His argument about sampling modules and cheap disks as well as the VST synths is good advice. In this day and age of as the Beatnuts call it, "Keyboard Beats" you need the possibility to transform your MPC into a keyboard beta maker.
Yeah. A Triton will do you nice, but if you don't have that kinda change or if you wanna flip it differently you need to go your own way. And since there is so much old gear available, why not try to save some dough and try it? As an old head messing with this stuff since 1989, I ain't even gonna get into a discussion of the texture and quality of the sound. But again he's right.

If you've got a computer, here's a few VSTi that have used, seen and think are incredible for the little bit of money they cost. (I'm talking less than $200 and more than likely less than $100.
