What is "Musical Instrument Program"?

I know this question has been asked before on this forum, but after reading through the answers I still don't have an understanding of this feature. I don't see it mentioned in the manual either. I'm debating on whether to upgrade from my current OS1 to OS2/XL and this may be the deciding factor. Can someone take a few minutes to describe in detail what this feature offers?

I'm not aware of a try-before-buy feature nor any videos that describe this feature.

You can install OS2XL and try it. You can do everything with it except save your work.

And JJ does explain instrument programs in the manual, but not from a conceptual point of view. He expects you to already know the concept. And you should: most every sampler is based around this concept. Except obviously MPCs, phrase samplers, and grooveboxes.

Have you used any other samplers (hardware or software)? A JJ instrument program is the same concept as a program for an Akai S-Series sampler, or a Kontakt instrument. It allows you to create instruments that you would normally play from a keyboard (e.g. piano or flute patches). As opposed to a Drum program (or what was previously just called a program on MPCs) where you map a different sample to each key - like Battery or the ASR-X.
