after getting a bit into the MPC world with the 1K and back to sampling from vinyl what i did years ago and do again now, i feel i am asking myself if an "up"grade to one of the mojo-swinging "mystical" mashines like the 3000 would be a good idea.

the JJOS and its grit editor for moving around pieces is very neat, does the 3000 offer something similar?

its not that i cant do tracks with the 1000 but it often feels somewhat like its hard to get the drums really right and also even with the pad upgrade i think the pad feel is somewhat stiff... but i would also be after the whole sequencer groove and fat unique sound of the 3000

is the whole thing a good idea and worth the workarounds with SCSI etc?

i sample and PRE-chop on the MAC as its much faster, so i guess i could load the 3000 with pre-chopped samples that may need re-chopping only in some cases... (thats what i do with the 1k aswell actually)

but workflow is very important for me aswell... but like someone else on here in a similar comparison said, if itsounds right in the first place its less work to get it right later...
does the 3000 has its desireale magic in matters of sound/groove/feeling/and workflow (tell me about that 3.5 OS)

or is this just 99% hype? and i should stick to 1k?

+ i should also ask if i will know the deal mostly by comming form the 1k or if it will be quite a learning curve?

No, the 3000 doesn't have a grid edit, it only has step edit. Imo the 3000 has better swing and better sound than the 1000, but that doesn't mean all your samples are going to be spectacular, they'll just have a colored sound, but both are very very different machines. With the 3.5 os on the 3000 it has features that make the 3000 more compatible with newer technology and some useful new features. I suggest you go get the 3000 manual and look it over thoroughly. The basics are about the same as you'd get with the 3.5 os. With a scsi card reader the 3000's a nice machine, but don't expect it to process with the same speed as your 1000 does. Older machines work slower, but imo have a better feel and sound. If loosing all the features the 1000 offers to get a better sound works for you then switch, but otherwise just stick with the 1000.

And yes, two different machine setups. They're similar in a few ways, but you'll have a little bit of a learning curve. I'm not trying to bash the 3000, but you just have to look into what you'd be switching to/getting into with the 3000. With it being an older machine you also have to look into/plan that you'll have to do a little maintenance in the future to keep it running properly(ie replacing tact switches, backlight, pad sensors and ect).

"If loosing all the features the 1000 offers to get a better sound works for you then switch"

basicaly YES... while i am hoping/expecting besides the Sound also for, better groove/swing/time-feel and for better pad feel and response.. i somehowe expecting them to be softer than the 1k after pad upgrade !? true?

i am not using too much features of the 1k... not at all... only the mixer for feeding my summing mixer during mixdown (not recording to DAW first) than the Grid editor for correction or offbeat and layering .... i think all of that works with the 3K aswell if just a bit different, right?
I think limited features will also be less hassle and confusion and may actually support my workflow.

also its said there is a a kind of blend taking place between the samples...

yes i think i would get the 3.5 and allready did some research...

so did i got this right, that with the 3.5 OS and some special kind of Card reader or SCSI Drive i can get direct connectivity to my Mac or am i mixing up somethign and its certainly drop from Mac to Card Reader or SCSI Drive and another step drop from there into the MPC ?
hope that makes sense?

Yeah, with the 3.5 os you can hybrid format your cards on the 3000 and then swap cards back and fourth with your mac or pc. I'd still suggest you look at the reg 3000 manual for a closer look at the differences. I still like the 3000 and hope to get one eventually, but as I said, they just have some differences.

i see

so do i need card reader AND!!! Scsi Drive or that conectivity between my DAW and the 3000 ?

or is i working like daw->scsi zip->card reader->mpc ??? if so.. in ONE step or several steps?

@differences.... will they be more work adn slow down the process? (i mean the inside OS working not the data transfair)

any more input anyone?

WOW!!!

just reading whats possible with the mansell labs OS and to be honest thos updates i am even missing on my darn 1k

so many things that make it easier to chop... those one-button functions for creating new samples or chopping soft start/end

irie

i think i am gonna do it

if someone wants to swapp a 3000 LE or fully maxed 3000 against my BLACK MPC 1000 with pad Senseor Update, updated Black pads and 40GB HDD (this i will miss)
give me a word

What you'll need to transfer between your computer and 3000 would be a usb or ect cardreader for the computer and then a scsi cardreader for the 3000. Skip the zips and zip drives altogether. You're just asking for frustration and lost files using zips.

3000 doesn't look like it will slow down the process much as far as workflow, but that's something you'll find out  .

"Skip the zips and zip drives altogether"

peanut butter in my ears.... uhm what? ???

great an USB Cardreader than.... so i ll have my storage on the MACand simply load those 32 mb of files i need for one session.... wait.... i have all my samples in WAV.. do i need to convert em first? is SND the audio format and PGM the programm format on the 3000 ?

it does not have to be connected while performing etc righ? just for transfering up to 32MB...

mon, i am looking forward to this... like i said the first few updates that the 3.5 OS offers are exactly things that i were totaly missing when i started MPC 1k with JJOS about half a year ago... JJOS 2 gave the great and mighty Grid editor but still nothign like those fine crafted 3.5 tricks such as editing samples while the sequence plays back, and quick chopping and re-saving etc... that all took me much too ong on jjos 1K so i usualy pre-chop on WIRETAP Studio on my Mac (great software you can also add vst/au effects to your samples Bfore loading them into the mpc)

oh i got one more Q:

does the freaking thing have A SOUND or rather not? and does it matter if i use the input converters (sampling directly into the mpc) or not? because for now with the 1k i sampled to my MAC as it was way more efficient.... but if the chopping and savin stuff is more fast and eficient (waht i think it is with the 3.5) i may change that approach..

so do the input Converters matter for the 3000 sound?

Yes, skip the zip drives. Look up 'click of death' and you'll soon realize why I said that. I've gone through 2 zip drives so far and had a number of zip disks die on me, but thankfully I backed up a few copies. Just get a scsi card reader for the 3000 and be happy you skipped over the zip drive bullshit. Yes, you need to convert those files to snd and you'll probably need to remake the pgm's so they work on the 3000. I know xl pgm files won't load on my 2k classic. So it's probably the same with the 1000 and 3000. Well, no, the scsi cardreader doesn't have to be connected while performing or using the 3000, but never NEVER connect or disconnect a scsi drive while the mpc is on. You'll end up blowing your scsi fuse, not fun to replace.

Yes, the 3000 has "a sound" it gives samples, just like my 2000 does. It has a warmer sound than the 1000. I suppose the mpc will still change the sound some what when you track your beats through the mpc outputs, but I don't think you'll get the same sound as you would if you had sampled into the 3000.

uhm, so i load them in, turn the mpc off, turn card reader off, mpc on and the samples are still in the mpc memory or how?

sounds like rather just letting the card reader running is the thing to do?

aaaargh about the sample inputs.. yes i thought so, while i dont care so much for programms and projects i made so far except 1 or 2, i have invested big amount of time sampling (into the Mac) from vinyl.... so to get the full sweetness in sound i shoul RE-sample these into the mpc 3000 and have to transfer them evers 32 mb back to MAC and clea mpc memory and on and on!?..... oh well... maybe i ll do that or maybe i ll just start sample into it directly from now on.... both fine i guess

i just saw that the 3.50 OS is freaking unbelivable expensive.... do you get any Hardware from him that needs to be installed into the 3k or is this simply a Software update?

is it mashine specific like the JJOS or personal-specific like Computer Software?

does anyone sell a 3k with 3.5 OS ? :)

3000 loads the samples into the ram. So whenever you turn off the 3000 everything in the ram in erased and has to be loaded. To transfer 1.format the card in the 3000's scsi cardreader. 2.put the card in the usb cardreader 3.put your samples, sounds or ect on the card. 4.put the card back in your 3000 drive. 5.load the sounds on your 3000 and make some beats.

Yes, leave the drive running or it's not going to work  . The 3000 os is on rom chips and to upgrade the os you have to replace the rom chips with the different os version unlike the other mpc's where it's done through software. So when you buy the 3.50 os from him, he sends the rom chips and you have to open the 3000 and replace them. You might be able to find somebody on ebay selling a 3000 with the 3.50 os, but usually they only have 3.11 installed.

Read this. It will tell you how the machine works and ect. I also recommend you read through the 60/3000 forum section for additional info.

Oh and how you properly turn on your mpc and drive so you don't blow your fuse. 1.turn on the scsi drive 2. turn on the mpc and to turn off 1.turn off the mpc 2.turn off the scsi drive.

thanks a lot for the help so far dude

one thing is confusing me... the card reader is somethign (or the same?) as the card reader on my MPC 1000 rigt?
further i need a USB Card reader to read the same cards...

but what is the SCSI drive you are talking about now??? what do i need it for?

sorry i seem to have missed something.. i thought the SCSI Drive is that ZIP drive that i shall skipp!?
