96 ticks

The MPC 4000 has 960 divisions per quarter note.

Can you change the setting so that there are 96 divisions per quarter like previous mpcs?

I`m curious why would you want to have less resolution?

i guess i'm just a bit scared that more resolution would change something about the timing of my drum programming.

i guess it boils down to the fact that i wonder whether the fact that the 96 divisions per quarter had anything to do with that mpc 'magic' that we all know and love

You can set the TC value in the TC field to (off)96.

Really, the only time you have access to all 960ppqn is with TC set to off.
If you were to quantize to quarter-notes it wouldn't matter how many pulses were between them .. the notes would be on quarters

if you have quantize set to anything, that will determine how many of the ppqn are "elligable" to hold your notes.
Assuming you quantize , the only effect that I could see the finer res having, would be finer adjustment in the swing...but it feels right to me, and a finer res wouldn't stop you from hitting the sweat spot, it would open up more slots in between them.


the new 960ppqn spec was implemented to compliment the more powerful sampler (multisampled instruments) where 96 was a fine enough grid for most drumming, computer sequencing has offered a much finer resolution for 10 years or so... making it "more natural" for pianists and orchestral composers.
If they hadn't upped the res, I think akai would have turned off most of the new users they were trying to attract when they added the better Instrument sampler features.

Quantizing? It's like Skywalker in the assult on the deathstar. TURN YOUR TARGETING SYSTEM OFF!!! use the force. Your brain and body are certainly capable of maintaining a solid rhythm.

Nah look again when you turn the TC option, you can chose OFF(96) or just plain OFF, i am assuming the second off is 960. Give it a shot.

I'm bringing this one back, because its giving me issues too. First of all, I have no problem quantizing hi hats, snares and shit like that. **** the force, that's just common sense.

I'm not going to quantize bass lines and kick drums and stuff like that, but the backbone of rhythms should be exact if possible. Is there a way to get back the solid feel of the 2000XL with the 96 ticks versus 960 and STILL quantize, without having to turn TC off. Turning TC off wouldn't give you 96 ticks, it would give you ZERO.

Allot of my newer sequences aren't transferring as smoothly to other sequences as they used to with my 2000, and I think its because of the 960 ticks.

No need to bark up the wrong tree on the ppq issue. For most drum editors of the past 96 ppq was sufficient for programming drums. Each quarter note in the past MPC were set at 96 ppq per quarter note. If you think of resolution of the sequencer as a computer moniter that means that your timing can be much tighter per pixel which gives you a better picture in this case of 4000 a more realistic feel of how you play. Furthermore when you play into previous MPC sequencers the T/C was set at 1/8, 1/16, and the highest was 1/32 triplets you couldn`t get higher than that using 96 ppqs. If you are using 1/16, or ambitious up to 1/32 triplets you have no reason to worry. The real reason the MPC 4000 is set at 960 ppqs isn`t for drum programming, but the plain fact that it is a full SAMPLER not just a drum sampler!!!! Since it can play multisamples, and be use for melodic note entry you can set the resolution up to 1/64 triplets or the 1/96 whole note if necessary for editing your bass lines, piano solos, and whatnots. Who is going to play a boring as quarter note drums anyway 1,2,3,4? You will play 1/8 or higher at least to have some kind of bounce, rhythm, or groove. The MPC 4000 is beyond a drum sampler aka phrase sampler. I had a 2000XL and to I had to change my way of thinking unless I thought I had an expensive ass drum machine for drums only (I could have stayed witht the 2000XL for that) The key to working with the previous MPCs was to have a MPC working with a Full sampling keyboard or Full sampler with midi keyboards. The MPC 4000 is all wrapped in one and so an full external sampler or keyboard for that matter isn`t necessary. You can use the higher resolution ppq for editing your strings, keys, bass, horns, in half notes and whole notes and others with greater precision than you could ever on the previous drum sampler of the MPC. Finally yes the MPC 1/96 off works for 1/4 notes which are the instruments not necessary for drums. Like I said who wants to make a borrring ass 1/4 drum pattern. 1, 2, 3, and 4 it is the beats that go between the quarter notes that give a pattern that bounce get your mind right. In the 80s 32 ppqs 64 ppqs, in the early 90s 96 ppqs, now 960ppqs to 1290ppqs and soon beyond that the higher the ppqs the more realistic the sequencer can be when recording and playing back your performance.

P.S. the so called MPC magic is the swing.
