NOT IN SYNC'

Ok, here's my dilema. I'm trying to record on Sonar. I got my trusty MPC (master, midi out) hooked up to my Triton LE (midi thru) and ending at Sonar (midi in). When I'm recording, I get this slow/fast effect (sounds like a tape reel slowing down/speeding up), plus it doesn't record my whole song (example: song length is 66 bars, Sonar records all the way to 66, but stops at 49 during playback). All the tempos match so I DON'T HAVE A FRIGGIN' CLUE about what I'm doing wrong. Can anyone 'sync' me in the right direction Thanks...

What settings are set in Sonar?

This is hardly enough info to troubleshoot.

MASTER, AS IN MPC IS THE MASTER DEVICE AND TRITON & SONAR ARE SLAVE DEVICES. I HAVE THE MIDI (A) OUT INTO TRITON 'THRU', AND TRITON MIDI OUT INTO SONAR (M-PHILE 2496 S/CARD MIDI IN). I HAVE SONAR SET TO MIDI SYNC WITH MMC ON IN MPC AND MMC SET TO 25 IN SONAR. ALL THE TEMPOS ARE SET TO 82 (WHICH SHOULDN'T MATTER SINCE MPC IS MASTER CONTROLLING ALL TEMPOS). I'M RECORDING AUDIO, SO MAYBE THAT'S WHERE MY PROBLEM IS. I UNDERSTAND SIMPLE MIDI HOOK-UPS (I.E. INS, OUTS, MASTER, THRU, AND SLAVE), BUT NOT MIDI DUMP, SYNC, AND WHATNOT. I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU IN HELPING ME CLEARING UP THE MADNESS DURING MY RECORDING SESSIONS. I'M NEW TO SONAR (RECORDING SOFTWARE IN GENERAL), SO I APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN THIS MATTER...THANKS

Again, you using midi clock or MTC? ATQ please.

MMC is not a sync signal, it is a control signal.

I think the midi through is the problem. they are known to cause timing issues and I would never use it unless in a pinch.

Also, try slaving the MPC to Sonar. I have always gotten good results by slaving the sound sources to the recording device.

I suspect that with Sonar, like Logic...you can't sync digital audio to midi.

In fact, you should really use SONAR as the master if you want to record digital audio.....and have it output either MTC , SMPTE, or Midi clock. (I've had similar issues...I think I'm settling on using Logic to output SMPTE to my MPC4000).

First things first, midi is unidirectional and THRU ports are outputs not inputs, you should not be sending a signal to a thru port, THE SIGNAL COMES OUT ..THRU.. THE THRU PORT.

Yes, this first bit is definately wrong......You should have the MPC midi OUT to the Triton's midi IN.

I think Logic even says on the drop down window for setting up syncing that it doesn't like being used as a slave. Once I finally got the right connections & codes set up I've had no problem slaving the MPC to Logic.

And for future reference when asking any questions about signal flow, it is easiest to go in the flow and direction of the signal..........like out of the out into and in............instead of its going out from this into the output-that buggs me out.

trust me when you have crazy modules and midi cables running about-your head will implode and you will bury yourself in confusion.


usb, firewire, rca ( phono ), 1/8, 1/4, all these connections are bidirctional, you can send signals back and forth...like an insert cable. MIDI is unidirectional ( the thru port is the same as the out port, but out carries master signal-thru carries slave signal.)-so you should think in that manner. point a to point b , not point q to point f.
