cubase and mpc1k.. how many of you use this combo?

does anyone here use the mpc as the master and cubase as the slave to record.. please anyone let me know, i wanna see how you go about doing this.. since i cant seem to get off the ground with it.. thanks

Can't be done, dude. If Cubase could sync to MIDI Clock it'd be doable, but no luck. Cubase can sync to MIDI time code but MPC 1000 only sends MIDI Clock. I think the 2000 was able to send MTC rather than Clock pulses.

The solution is this: progam your beats on the MPC standalone, MIDI up to Cubase, and turn Sync in on. Set Cubase to transmit MIDI Clock signals using the Transport->Sync Setup menu option. MPC will then play in sync with Cubase by setting Cubase tempo to the correct number (make sure tempo in transport bar is set to Fixed rather than Track) and positioning track locator, hitting play, stop, etc on Cubase transport controls.

Alternately, you can program alongside Cubase, by simply holding down the Rec button on the MPC and starting up Cubase with the play button. This prevents you from recording actual MIDI/Audio into Cubase, and allows you to progam soft synths/external hardware to play alongside the internal sounds of the MPC.

For information on recording MPC 1000 multitrack MIDI into Cubase (something I only recently struggled my way through) do a search here, there's info about it somewhere. if you can't find it, I'll post here myself but I'm damned tired right now.

Cubase can't sync to MIDI Clock? I thought all the major sequencers could do that, surely?

The article you linked to specifies slaving a MIDI device to Cubase/Nuendo via MIDI Clock, not slaving Cubase/Nuendo to the device via MIDI Clock. It only works one way with Cubase. (though I think old Cubase VST products may have synced to Clock signals...)

The reasoning behind this is that MC is not as accurate as MIDI Time Code, etc.

how bout this, im about to try cubase on a different computer.. my mac, i have an older version of it on there too.. havent quite made it to 2 on my mac.. but yea.. im gonna try .. if i have some trouble i hope yall would help me out.. i think ill try the first two solutions and see what happens.. i just want ease of editing ya know.. i figured this would help? i appreciate the knowledge yo

I realised the timecode/clock problem earlier this week after borrowing a copy of Cubase SX. I only want to run Cubase as a host, so I can use tempo sync'ed VST effects to mash up the output of my MPC1000. I guess I still could, but it would mean clocking the MPC from Cubase, which I'd rather avoid. Anyone know of any VST host apps that do sync to MIDI clock??

Hmmm... thanks for that, good to know. It's been a long time since I used Cubase anyway (I'm a Sonar fan, but haven't used that since I got my MPC1000).

I suppose it depends on what they mean by saying MC is less accurate: I know it won't fly in a super-critical environment such as soundtrack scoring, you'd definitely want a MTC/SMPTE master sequencer there. But for general musical work, I could see it being just fine.

On the original question: I happened to look at VST Hosts today, and I see that the TobyBear MiniHost manual says it has MIDI Clock support. And it's free: http://www.tobybear.de/
