Quick ? about a MIC hooked up 2 the MPC4000

hey is it a good idea to hook up your mic to your MPC 4000 sound quality wise, or would it be a better idea to hook up your mic to a Pre Amp way better.can someone give me some decent imput thanx yall

In order to do this, just plug a Mic into Mic/Line input. Hit the 'Gain' button next to the Record pot (top right) so it is in the 'high' positon. Hit the 'Record' menu button (not the red 'Rec' button) Change the input source to Analog, and change the mode to mono. I have not actually done this myself, but it should work.

As far as quality goes, I try to only use good pre amps and good mics. I'm sure the pre amp on the 4000 is basically $hit...so are Mackie and Behringer pre's, but I'm kind of a gear snob. You wont really find a good pre amp for less than $200...thats for ONE pre amp! Check out http://www.fmraudio.com/ The RNP 8380 (2 ch Pre) is one of the best pre amps around for the price. ($500)

Its kinda hard to give a strait answer to you. For home recording of demos I guess its fine. But you will never.....ever....find Mackie pre's being used in a profesional studio on a major album. Unless you are using really nice mics though, I wouldnt worry too much about pre amps. BTW, what mics are you using. I hate to sound like a gear snob, but I'm tryin to kick down the truth about the profesional way of recording.
