YAMAHA A4000 Sampler

So what's the deal with my posts like dissappearing after two day's.

If any cats out there are rockin an A4000 let me know how they go!!

I'm real interested in hearing on how they work in realtime, with control changes etc...

I'm doin diff. styles of electronic music as well as prog. back tracks for singers/songwriters. All kinds of stuff really. I use the A5000 in most things that I do, but find it most useful for it's fx/filters and general ability to mangle stuff. The sound library that comes with the samp. (about 10 cds I think) is OK for a few things, but I don't really touch it - I got other sound sources for pianos, FM, Analogue etc. I don't think that yo uwill be disappointed if yo ugo for it cos it is a very powerful machine, with all the realtime control you could need in a rack. Get a simple midi controller, hook up to your MPC and create. I got a few links that will helöp you...

What's the deal with compatibility with other sample formats? I'd like to get some massive multi layered orchestral sample packs and stuff like that, but mostly i want to sample stuff myself and use the A4000.

That ampfea site has a lot of info on the A3000...is it similar to the A5000 and will that info help me out with the A4000?

On the controlability of the A4000/5000 is it cut out for live sample mangling and stuff?

I'm very interested in FM synthesis....been using subtractive for a while now...but i was wondering if FM synthesis leans itself towards some more crazy sounds....What hardware FM synths should i bee on the look out for...anything new worth while investigating?

What FM synth's do you use?

yamaha dx is THE fm synth....or maybe try one of those fm groove boxes also mafde by yamaha...if you use software it has to be the fm7....

Two different beasts.

For FM, if you want hardware get yourself an FS1R, otherwise for software FM7 or Sytrus.

A4000, I have an A5000, definitely a good HW mangler, solves most of the A3000 problems, adds lots of new effects and some cute sample manglers.

Poor SCSI implementation, risky filesystem, flimsy knobs are the downside.

TX81Z rack module for FM is the bomb!

Yes, the 4/5000 is updated (and much better) A3000 - that site is about all 3

No probs. with SCSI transfer from my mac, but you have to asign midi notes when in the sampler (not a problem cos it can learn from the note you play in)

Compatability is not the best - will import AKAI CDs but you gotta do each sample individually!!! and you also lose filter ADSR settings etc. A real pain! The orchestra CD that comes with is alright, but not up to today's mega sampled 200GB monsters I tend to use EXS or am on look out for a triton/motif for those kinda things.

What r you after with "live mangleing and stuff". Do you mean "on the fly" sampling? Never really put that to a test.

yeah orbital and aphex love that one...damn cheap too! we had one in a local store for under £50....

I want to be able to tweak stuff live on stage instead of recording all my twealing beforehand....i basically don't want to get the thing if its not reliable and completely obsolete....but it doesn't seem so from all your posts so maybe its worthwhile.....

I wonder why manufacturers aren't making FM hardware synths nowadays?

they have no interfaces except the groove box and the fs1r...so no real time tweaks unless you have a midi controller with knobs...

they are introducing it into their analogues..the virus and nord i think can do fm..the new a-station range has a limited yet useful fm sections...plus stuff like the fs1r does it all...there is no better and no need for any better at the moment...
