So do i have to get a digital mixer or could i just get a MOTU 828MKii and do the mixing from my PC? Is that a reasonable route? Digital mixing desks are too damn expensive!!!

If you don't mind moving the faders on your screen with the mouse then you'll be fine. I've been mixing in Cubase with the mouse for about 4 or 5 months now and it works great. I'm still gonna get the Mackie Control pretty soon though cuz I could mix alot faster and easier with that, but it's gonna take a minute to save up to get one.

8 inputs isn't enough. I'm gonna need much more than that. closer to like 16.

Been looking at the MOTU 24i/o.

Are there any other options out there for analog I/O????

8 inputs isn't enough? You're gonna be recording more than 8 sources at one time? Are you recording a band or something? Cuz you can always record 8 at one time and then record another 8 after that until you've recorded everything onto the computer.

BTW - you got 10 analogue inputs on the 828MK2

I suppose i could just record 8 tracks at one but then, i'll need to get a patchbay.... I got quite a bit of outboard gear...with a total of 24 outs.....

I thought the 828MK2 only had 8 analogue Ins.....

yeah you just need a patchbay. I have plenty of outboard gear too and I only have 4 inputs on my soundcard.

wouldn't you need a mixer to be able to monitor the 24 outs? Then, if it had a decent buss system, you could get away with a simple 2 in 2 out sound card?

The 828MK2 has 10 in total - 8 round the back plus two up front with mic. pres.

Seen lots of peeps going on about the Behringer AD800 which yo ucould use to hook via adat or dig up to the 828 thus giving you something like 18 analogue ins...

If he does that then he will no longer be mixing in the PC. The whole object was to record all the tracks into the PC and mix in the digital environment.

Yeah, i want it all to happen on my PC...

Before this i looked at the new Yamaha 01x......it's a controller interface that has 8 analogue ins and 16 inputs via the computer using Yamaha's mLAN firewire technology......

Have you checked it out.....

Perhaps that is an answer?

The Mackie controller is a lot like the 01x in terms of style and layout....only thing is.....it's pretty darn expnsive for just a controller and the MOTU 828 isn't tooo cheap neither.....

MAybe a digital mixing desk works out to be cheaper? :?

why don`t U take a look at the new mackie onyx mixers? I have the smaller, 12 channels, and it`s all good. U can buy the one with 16 channels, add the firewire interface, and then record all channels digital at the same time.

I dont want to sacrifice the controller option.....

By arctec Tue Aug 17, 2004 1:01 pm
decisions decisions...

i use 828 together with a mixing board to help monitoring.

everything is run into the mixer whilst programming and writing. When I go to record I switch over (via patchbay) and record direct to the 828 in a couple of passes. the reason i do this is precisely because I don't have enough inputs on the motu to plug everything in at the same time.

Once everything is recorded I then mix on the mac using mouse. from your postings it seems that this is what you are trying to avoid - using a mouse to mix. if that is the case, then it seems to me that the yammy o1x mite be the best option - audio interface, mixer and control surface in one.

That's what i'm thinking. I mean including the mLan audio channels it can mix it has 28 inputs, compresion, four-band EQ, gate per channel and two effects units....

I mean first place for me would me the MOTU 24I/O and a Mackie Control....but that is going to get ridiculously expensive....

HAve any of you cats tried out the 01x??
