No you can not just record.

The MPC is a sampler/sequencer.

What you need to do is dump your stuff onto a multi track recorder. Pro-tools is perfect and there is a free version available online.

By the way if you are not already on a macintosh- get one.

Garage band has the realest sounding grand piano I've heard in a long time.

I think you're asking: can you record your piano notes into the Sequencer, without recording it as Samples? Definitely, you just need to sort out the MIDI routing on playback:
- with keyboard MIDI Out -> MPC MIDI In, set the Sequence to Record.
- Check that Step Edit shows the recorded MIDI events
- wire up MPC MIDI Out to keyboard MIDI In
- set the output Port and Channel on the MIDI Track you recorded e.g. 1A = channel 1 on port A.

Or: you can record individual piano notes, or download piano samples. I have a link to a set called "pine piano" on my web site, plus a couple of PGMs that go with them. The OCT PGM is for Pad playing (1 octave per page), the CRO PGM is for an external keyboard, all 64 notes in order with no gaps.

I use the MPC1000 Sequencer for more than just samples, it's a powerful tool for controlling other MIDI devices too. Just play around, and learn as much MIDI as you can stand.
