CHOPPING BASSLINES on my S950....NEED ASSISTANCE PLEASE!

I've been looping basslines for a few weeks now and have never really chopped up a sample on the S950. I've previously done all my chopping in the MPC-60 II. I'm experiencing a lot of difficulty with overlapping of sounds and keygroups that change when I change the sample name....it's complete chaos. I've been told that it was smart to keep all your samples of the same instrument within a single PROGRAM. I've done that so far.

This is what I'm doing (controlling my S950 with my mpc60 II:

I've sampled a 5 second bass riff into the S950. I saved it as BASSLINE 01. I've assigned that bassline loop to a single pad on my MPC-60 II and named that track-5 BASSLINE in my MPC's SEQUENCER.

Now I've taken the sample (in the S950) BASSLINE 01 and truncated it. I then began a new PROGRAM - BASSLINE and applied the proper settings (Filters). I copied the bassline and renamed it BASSLINE 02 (in edit sample mode). I now have 2 seperate samples of the same bassline. I then truncated that sample to a single note and have assigned it to the next sequential pad on my MPC-60 II (ie. 5,6,7,8,9,10). This is where things get confusing. I want to obviously retain the key of the original bassline loop. The MPC-60 II can control the S950 by playing the pads like a piano. The sounds change pitch and it's just chaotic. I also want to use the same channel assignment (channel 2 as channel 1 has my TONE). Both samples are in the same program (BASSLINE) but I assumed I was to give them different keygroup assignments? I know i'm doing something wrong. Can someone please walkthrough the steps to chopping up a sample loop in the S950. I'd really appreciate. I only wish to chop music samples. I chop my drums on the MPC-60 II and don't experience nearly as much difficulty.

i may be able to help, but im not fully understanding your problem...

i assume that you know how to assign a sample to a midi note number in the s950, and then assign that midi note number to an mpc pad...

are you getting overlapping sounds? that would be in the keygroups key range settings...EDIT SAMPLE, PAGE 5 (low key & high key) to have that certain sample play back on only one mpc pad you want to have the low and high key set to the same midi note number! also make sure that in the mpc you dont have 2 or more pads assigned to the same midi note number...

are you triggering the samples out of pitch??? that would be because of the samples NOMINAL PITCH setting (the pitch at which the sample was recorded, default is C3/60)... EDIT SAMPLE PAGE 3... to replay the sample at the same pitch that it was sampled at, you must have the NOMINAL PITCH setting on page 3 of edit sample set to the same midi note number as the samples pad assignment... so the midi note number of the pad assignment and the nominal pitch midi note number must match to prevent from playing the sample out of key....

Not really. You didn't provide steps of chopping up a sample. Guitar licks and basslines are most difficult in this manner.

Could you provide concise instruction step by step. I"m no moron just uneducated. The s950 Manual was poorly written and its format is unhelpful. If you need me to i'll call you up on the phone and you can just walk me through it that way. Thanks so much homey. PEACE

im sorry but im still not exactly sure what your problem is...

maybe i dont quite understand because i havent really chopped up many loops, i have been mostly just working on drum hits on my s950 so far...

id just copy the loop as many times as i needed to, chop those copies into the individual notes that i want from the original loop, then set up an individual keygroup for each newly copied and truncated sample... remember that when you copy keygroups that you have to go back and reassign high and low key midi note numbers to coincide with the pad you want to assign the new sample inside that keygroup to, also dont forget to change the nominal pitch to the same midi note number as the desired pad assignment, unless you want the pitch of the sample to be altered in playback...

are you trying to play the sample in different pitches on different pads? or are you trying to keep the same pitch no matter how many different pads you assign pieces of the original sample to???

i still not sure if i was even close to helping you with your problem...

good deal.... but i find it easier to change the nominal pitch in EDIT SAMPLE instead of transposing in EDIT PROGRAM... if you change the nominal pitch of the sample to the exact note number of the pad that you are assigning it to, then it will keep the same pitch... if you know where you are going to assign the sample ahead of time, you can assign the nominal pitch before you sample therefore it will already be in the right pitch when you assign it to a pad....
