Problem Installing RAM

So I bought the correct RAM card for the MPC 500
I put it into the machine correctly.
When I turn on the machine it says:

SODIMM test 128M
pass 1 : 1%

the percentage continues to increase and when it gets to 50% the following message comes up:

Memory Problem
Check the memory

I do not understand why this is happening nor what is causing it to happen.

Does anyone know what this is about or how to fix it?

What kind of RAM did you buy? If its not the Official Akai Ram, you might wanna try a diff one.

If it is Akai one, you may have a bad one.

Make sure the RAM is properly seated, and be careful not to break the clips.

Your MPC should not be doing any test.

The little plastic clips that hold the ram in position can bust off if your not gentle with them and then your screwed.

Where did you get the ram? Ebay?
Was the ram advertised as compatible with MPC's from the seller?

Mine came upgraded so I luckily never had to get into this.
But I seem to recall reading somewhere that not all brands and models are compatible even if they have the right specs.

But that should of worked, strange that it'll do a test. Mine just turned on and said 128 MB. Could be a defect.

yea i just turned mine on and it said 128MB, i've never had it test before.

well maybe I just destroyed the card. I bought an Akai brand and it works. So I guess its settled. Thanks

could've just been a bad chip. Plenty of people are running with 3rd party memory.

I remember when I installed my ram upgrade that it ran that test with the percentage 1% 2% 3%... 100% thing - so yes, that does normally happen (or at least it happened to me!).

it sounds like your ram (despite being the correct type) chip is somehow flawed.. if you bought it from a shop legit, then take it back. if you bought it off ebay, then you can try approaching the seller, but you're probably screwed and you may as well just buy another ram chip.

do be careful when you're taking the ram out again as people on here have commented on how brittle or weak the plastic (which holds the ram chip in place) are - so don't be rough with it!

oh yeah, 3rd party ram works fine as long as it meets the exact specifications.

exact specifications mean EXACT. i presume that what you've tried to install is exactly the same specs as it should be.

i run 3rd party ram (kingston brand) and have never had a single problem.

I use those exact ram and they do work on the 500/1000/2500.
Try to clense the part of the ram that you stick into the slot in the MPC in alcohol, that may work. (remember to let the ram dry before slamming them into the MPC)

And make sure to slam it.


Cleaning the leads is a good idea IMO.
