Yamaha HS50m / HS80m???

i've owned the 80's, i would get the 50's. they're modeled after the old ns10's and you tweak the mid control in the back and it essentially switches between an ns10 sound (high mid concentration) and a "good" sound. so they could double as listening speakers. oh yeah and you can get them with the subwoofer for around the same price as the 80s alone... the 80s are going to have a little more bass in them but not by that much i had a sub with my 80's... i eventually wished i just had the 50s and the subwoofer that actually goes with it (i had a krk sub, it was almost all the way OFF it was so loud) either way you gotta learn your rig, and still test your mixes on EVERY pair of speakers you have at your disposal (if you're wise..)

So how are those Yamaha's exactly.
I am in the process of getting new ones right now. And don't want to spend too much.
The KRK's must be a misbuy because they are just too cheap.

What do you guys advise?

80s are great except one of mine is in the shop because of this weird crackling from the woofer. still under warranty so they're fixing them free-besides that i'm glad i didn't get the 50s. Im in a big basement and needed that low end and high volume-no need for sub imho

i would love to post up my opinion on the 80's but as it goes my Mrs spawned upon me the day they were delivered that these are a Xmas gift...

i was like yh right. :lol: ... went to work, came home and BAM boxes all wrapped up near the tree.

guess i gotta wait. but keep posting so it gives me a idea. lol

the 5's are totally worth it if you live in a small apartment... you can't beat them for the price... and not everyone needs to feel the bass in their bowels. sometimes smaller speakers are just simply more appropriate. i have zero complaints about mine... they're exactly what i need for my setup... the 8's would be overkill in my case. if i had a larger space, i'd definitely go for the 8's with subwoofer... but the yamahas are worth it no matter which set you get imo.

one of my alesis monitors failed...I promised myself a nice set of monitors next... Im thinking either hs80m's or those jbl joints.

Just make sure you position the monitors so they are level with your ears when you sit in your mixing position. I found with mine (rokit 8's), I get a more accurate stereo field with them on their sides and the tweeters inward, subs outward. When I position my speakers like this and moved them away from the wall, my mixes improved a lot. I eventually wanna get some hsm80's too though. I have never heard anything negative about them.

to my ears, the 80s sound alright but the 50s are unbearable. I'm sure people can still make some fine mixes on em but I'd rather not have to.

Shit, I just realized I gave wrong info. :x I have my tweeters outward and subs inward, not the opposite. I'm sitting here in the stu now looking at them and just realized I made the typo. So tweets out, subs in.
