am i losing my mind?

I just "upgraded" from a 2000xl to a 1000 w/ jjos2xl, and now everything sounds fake, reminiscent of fruity loops or reason, samples sound "dead" drums have no flavor or depth. Should I downgrade to a different jjos? Should I sell my 1000 and go back to a 2000xl? Am I doing something wrong.?! I'm fairly dissappointed.

What's the best jjos to maintain a grungy underground sound?

sounds should be pretty much the same. are you using a program created in the 2000xl, or just loading a sample?

are there any filters, effects etc switched on?

also, what is the main volume set at -24db?

have you booted with the erase button held top do a clean reset?

I thinks the OS doesn't make any difference how the sample sounds...
But i can imagine that there might be a difference how the sample-engine sounds... like a classic 12-bit sampler has it's typical gritty, lo-fi-sound... but you can't simulate this with another OS, it's the way the audio-signal is processed in the mpc.

Stock sounds will always sound stock. Sampled sounds won't sound stock just because you installed JJ.

if you hold tap tempo, window key and pads a1 a2 a3 and a4 while tapping numeric you will get more grunge out of your 1k, each tap of numeric results in another level of grunge, you can set it at a maximum level of 25 which is pretty hot!

jj told me this trick a while back.

Thanks for the tip on bringing up main volume helped tremendously, I was afraid I was gonna lose some of the grunge when upgrading, oh well. Can't tell if the trick using tap tempo pads number key is a joke or not ill try it tho, thanks for all the input, I was fairly disconcerted last night hopefuly my opinion changes after utilizing your input.

If u post up snippets from before and after (the mpc switch) I'll check em out. I could probably pinpoint the difference in sound and give advice.

Most likely, your MPC2K had global compressor and EQ on, and your new MPC1K does not. It's the simplest explanation for the symptoms: samples sound "dead" drums have no flavor or depth

you could just go to effects-master-set it how you like.

There is very little difference (tiny) in the sound of 3000/2000/2500 playing the same samples side by side. I have tried it.
