Why Dig?

Why dig? Why use vinyl? I'm new in this whole sampling business, but why use vinyl? Is it simple a matter of preference? You can sample with mp3's...correct?

A lot of rare tracks and records are available that you can't get today for whatever reason. The artist or group no longer exists, limited production run on album, whatever.

I have discovered so much good music, not just samples, from record shopping. Something about hunting for vinyl is very rewarding to many people.

word. and yea u could use mp3 but you need to know what names to search and what to look for. with diggin, if somethin has a hot cover u can pick it up n find somethin new and if its good then everytime u see their album cop it. plus its like christmas when you get home w some records cuz u never kno wat u ganna get. and its a skill so you can get better at it. when i first started i used to buy trash. now i can usually tell the stuff that probably has a break on it to the records that most likely wont have anything.

Diggin for samples was a way of the old school cats. We didn't have mp3's back in 88 just vinyl, tapes, and cds. Some people will never realize how easy you have it compared to producers from back in the day like Marley Marl.

Why dig? To enjoy the thrill of going out with your last $30 to travel thru time and spending hours listening to music in its dopest form next to being live.....then dropping that needle on the vinyl and bobbin' ya head to the beat you havent even made yet....to check the date on that record and wonder how many people had this in their possession in the last 40 years of its existence....to put a little something back into the music by supporting one of the last record spots your neighborhood may have...there are a bunch of reason to dig for real...

You cant EVER get that from downloading a mashed up mp3

Samplers compress the sound, so sampling mp3s just compresses them even further to sh!t. The results will be some sh!tty music and everyone will stay away from you like a diseased rodent with a piece of cheese in his mouth. You like cheese?

diggin for vinyl is one of the most amazing things on earth, If you don't feel the same way you shouldn't worry cos it's all down to personal preference, I also enjoy diggin on the internet, having said that, I have never found an amazing piece of music on the internet an not tried to hunt it down on vinyl.

I try and buy from shops but there is something almost equally as nice about getting that knock on the door an seeing the postman with your record in his hand...only 10 minutes ago I spent $79 dollars on 3 records from the net. original 7'' of the jeff sound track which is an old french film, a jw library record and a record called EVIL RUSSIAN BREAKS. you would not believe whats on that evil russian breaks, I've never needed to pay so much money for 10 seconds of music in my whole life.

my advice, buy yourself a vestax handy trax an try and get friendly with an independent record shop owner, but be quick cos sooner or later it will be only producers and the odd few keeping the one record shop per city open.

Do you have a track listing for the Evil Russian Breaks? I've been sampling a lot of Soviet era records. I think it's unlikely that someone could sue you for IP rights as they were produced under communism. It's hard to believe some of the funky sht that was made behind the Iron Curtain. Seems like you coulda got sent to Siberia for being that funky lol.

its a funny question hehehe!! mp3's though are not actually compressed...but they have up to 80% of their musical information taken out...why would you want to sample somethin that has a mjority of its freq taken out? i mean ive done it but im not proud hehe diggin is for the soul and mind.

it's a cool feeling when ya in the record shop, the dungeon, my city's is in a basement, and you search,, for a cool name, wicked artwork , find things you never heard, maybe nobody has in 30 years,, you walk over to the turntable listening station anticipating what you might find on that record or records you dug out of the piles

maybe you will find that overlooked groove that is just like GOD DAAAAMN hot


or maybe you won't,, but it's thrill , like goin deer huntin or deep sea fishing,,

what might you come home with the experience is alot of it as the find,


not the same just downloading mp3's


records just sound like records you don't just hear the sounds but you really LISTEN to a record you pay attention while your doin it

Digging for vinyl and than sampling from one of your fresh finds is a feeling like no other! And the overall sound is arguably much better, especially compared to mp3's.
Theirs also something to be said about having an actual collection of music that you can feel and touch and in some cases SMELL . As much as the dust irritates my lungs, you gotta love that smell!

Im fairly sure that 70% of music produced onto vinyl has never been put onto CD.

80% of music put n vinyl has not been digitally recorded to CD.

there 2 different worlds anolog and digital, i was born in a anolog world my ears never got use to digital, i sample both ,but only when nessesary from digital.

and most of what everyone mentioned at different times been dong this 30yrs it's to late for me to change now...it's all i know
