tempo and sequence

when recording a sequence where do you guys start with the tempo. i usually start around 90-95 bpm and then tinker with once it's recorded. but i can see how this might become rather limiting. any tips?

i usually start with a sample and then adjust it to the tempo that i like the best and then go from there
