How to navigate and load from CF card?

Just took delivery of a MPC500. Says it has OS v 1.1.

CF card has many folders of sounds on it. First folder is called 'Kits'.

I put the card into the MPC, press 'Mode' and then pad 2, to load.

Display says "Load: Program" on the first line and "Fld: 1. Kits >" on the second line. The cursor flashes on the letter "P".

When I press the right cursor arrow button, the cursor continues to flash on the "P"; in other words, the display doesn't change. Manual says pressing the right cursor arrow button will let you navigate the folders, but it doesn't do anything.

The LED against the "Do It" button flashes, but when I press "Do It" and confirm, nothing is loaded.

Moving the data wheel simply changes "Program" to "Sample" to "Sequence" etc.

So, how to navigate the card and load something? Based on what I've written, is it obvious what I'm doing wrong? Any help appreciated!

step one----turn off mpc
step two----pull out manual
step three ---read it 2 or 3 times
step four---turn on mpc...............................................................

Questions are cool. But its just kind of lazy to say you just got it and you want someone to tell you how to load something.

What I would do is get a highlighter pen and then browse your manual and highlight all the basics that you need to get started, like loading something.

The manual is not that big of a read, at all, but it is mildly technical so you may have to go back to a pertinent paragraph or sentence a few times.

What I also did was after I got comfortable with the beginning stuff and was ready for more advanced stuff, I went back through with a highlighter in a different color. Like yellow and then orange or something.

seriously a word of advice .....it wont help you but someone gettin one soon might learn....
if you buy a 500 on line download the manual from akaipro.com (pro hahahah makes me laugh every time )
and you have a good grasp by the time you get your unit.....

Besides the manual... check out the MPC tutor links. The MPC500 tutorials are pretty good if you have no idea how the MPC line thinks/works/feels and hate reading manuals.

I think you'll find it less than helpful asking questions about what is going wrong in this situation because you obviously have a card that somebody else setup (for who knows what purpose) and you're not really providing exact step by step details.

Good luck finding answers.

you'd think that if you paid big amounts of money for something you'd wanna read up on how to use it and learn it properly. i mean...the time that it took you to come on here and post, you could read those couple paragraphs in the manual...

Thankyou all for your advice - I see the MPC500 community is very active, which is most encouraging. I guess a four-word summary of much of the advice here is 'RTFM'.

Wise words to be sure.

However, I thought I had indeed read the manual and wasn't being 'over-enthusiastic' with my post, which is why I quoted in my question what appeared to be the pertinent bit in the manual. Anyway, I have now answered my own question through additional trial and error; can't say the manual helped me any further.

The manual does seem to be comprehensive - it's just that it's written more in the style of a 'technical reference manual' rather than a 'workflow tutorial' that takes you from cracking open the packaging to a finished song in a direct, straight line; so one needs to 'jump around' a bit. But I guess that's what the separate 'MPC 500 tutorial' and Youtube instruction vids are for.

I'm not new to hardware sequencers - I also have a RM1X and MC50 controlling hardware samplers (Yamaha A5000, Emu Ultra 4xT, Kurzweil K2000) - all three sequencers have their own strengths and ways of engaging the user which I find does influence the end product created - I've only posted a question re the MPC500, because that's the only one I'd struck an 'issue' with. Am loving the portability and self-contained nature of the MPC500 though.

But point taken - I should have persisted with the experimentation further before posting.

Possibly the wrong lesson to learn around here about posting messages... I think the RTFM is useful... but it wasn't exactly obvious to me where you were having a problem until I re-read your post. Re-reading your first post it looks like you weren't using the down arrow to navigate to the the second line?

That's exactly right for any manual.

It's supposed to go over the functions of the gear. You then create your own workflow, ie.. procedures on how to use those
functions, that part is always up to the user. I think alot of people don't like, misuse, look past manuals cause of that.

Glad you didn't get immediately offended at any of the posts here, these guys will really try to help you out they just wish
users use that grey matter first, just as it should be (not saying you specifically - we can see that that you did - just needed something extra). But again.......
