As with anything else, practice will make perfect and you'll find plenty of loops that you can't split on a 4 to the floor or other standard easily divisible time frame.

Ight NearTao, forgive the complete n00b'ness of the question but I gotta ask
"4 to the floor" means 4 bars to what?

A 4 to the floor beat is a bar of 4/4 time where the kick drum is hitting at the start of every downbeat.

It's the techno boomph-boomph-boomph-boomph, if the above explanation is wrong or confusing.

4 on the floor = 4 bar or multiples of 4 (8,12,16,etc) lengthed loops split "on the one".

That works fine for most traditionally arranged songs and breaks. But sometimes if you set your chops by ear according to the sound instead of the measure you'll get wilder off beat stuff.

Both styles work, just 2 tools in a toolbox. It depends what your working with and what your trying to make.
