Saving on 2k XL doesn't work, cf issues?

Hi all!

I have a cf reader on my 2000 XL and I did a beat that I couldn't save(actually it's here with kinda raw sound quality cos I wasn't able to save it on the cf http://www.myspace.com/eiboumoods).

Mpc said "time out error" and "disk read error". The cf reader is bought from an mpc-forum user SMC. Card was in the machine for the whole time I was making the beat. First I sampled and then loaded some sounds from CF. After booting the machine I tried if the problem remained but now it works again.

I have no clue what the problem is. It's very irritating because now I can never make a beat with confidence - sometimes saving works and sometimes not. All I have is uncertainty.

My readers work perfectly fine.

What most users have issues with is the Card they use.

The MPC is an old machine and can be very picky as to which cards it likes.

I can't write new software for the machine. If I could, I would.

Make sure the cards are Compact Flash Type I or Type II. True IDE mode cards have worked well for me as well.
NOT ALL CARDS ARE COMPATIBLE, but MOST in those formats will work fine.

Interesting how it was fine and now is more and more of a problem?
Sounds like your card is crrrrrrapping. Or you're stuffing it with files, or file names, that the machine is having trouble with.

Freshly format the card with the MPC (After backing up all your data of course.)

I can't tell you how many people are not paying attention to the format of card.

Yes, other cards in those formats can work, but will have issues.
And yes, some of those cards in those formats will have issues.

Remember that the MPC2000XL was made BEFORE compact flash was in use.
They ADDED CF drives to them when they re-released, and even wrote a new OS to help with some changes.

Like I said, it works for most of the time. If the card wasn't mpc-formatted it shouldn't work at all, right?

I guess I gotta take a backup of the data on the cf and format it again.

U mean airing stuff out like shutting the machine down? If it was like that, I had no clue that you would be here on the site right now.

It is best to let the MPC format the card.

The card is mpc-formatted. I formatted it after I did the research about hot-swapping

But I'll format it again. If this problem comes again, then I guess I gotta change the card.

I don't have a computer cf-card reader at the moment, gotta wait for a while to format the card, but it's very weird. If I sample only a bit and the mp is on for like five minutes everything's ok. If it's on for like half an hour and I sample more(I didn't even go to load/save screen before the failure attempt) it won't save nor load anymore.

Do you know if it's possible this is a formatting issue cos the card still works for a while but not a long period of time.

is it just your .ALL file that does not work?

No, I can't save or load anything once the card doesn't work anymore.

I mpc-formatted the card and now it seems to work. Let's see what happens when I transfer the data back to the card from computer.

Yes, the cf card was mpc-formatted when it started to **** with me.

AND NOW IT DID IT AGAIN, **** I'M PISSED OFF. I NEVER SAY THIS BUT I HAD THE HOTTEST BEAT I'VE DONE LIKE, EVER? AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I GO TO SAVE IT: "DISK WRITE ERROR".

This shit is about loading from cf after sampling. That is what does it. After you have loaded A SINGLE SOUND from you memory card shit won't save anymore. I don't have another media, zip or anything to save to. So I thought I do the same thing I did earlier - I took the cf card out and tried if it would refresh the card. I've succesfully done that before. Not this time though.

Ok, the last message was a bit tempted. Written in 3 in the morning after a two hour beat making session - with no save.

So I know what the problem is. When I power up the mpc and sample and after sampling load a sound from cf card, mpc won't save the samples after that. You know a solution? Is my card installed properly. I think I loaded some sounds from cf when I installed the cf reader into my mpc. The problems have emerged just now.

To me it sounds like you have a defective card.

What brand of card are you using?

What is the card's capacity?

Have you tried other cards to see if the problem persists?

Have you made sure the cables inside are secured?

^Yeah, that's what I thought too and tried another one. Now everything is a mystery and I don't know where the problem is. I try to keep it short though there is a billion issues that are giving me head ache.

First of all, I double checked the cables - all set. The card that I used is 1gb Delkin cf-card. I have tried other cards and now comes the unbelievable part: I have a Sandisk 1gb cf card that has worked earlier with no problems. I decided to try it. To make it work, I of course had to mpc-format the card first(it was in use with my mpc 2500 earlier).

When I inserted the Sandisk card into my 2k xl, the card reader noticed it. After inserting the Sandisk and powering up, I then mpc-formatted the Sandisk card in my 2k xl. When it was done, the mpc still recognized the card. BUT when I booted the machine, my mpc didn't recognize the card anymore after mpc-formatting it. I mean there was no atapi and mpc said to me that "no floppy device" like the cf card would be incorrect. It isn't because it has worked earlier.

How can this be? The Delkin card, that also worked earlier just perfect, is now totally out of control. Sometimes when I load a beat from cf card on 2kxl and work the beat for like 5 minutes and decide to go to save the work I've done it is now impossible: "disk read error, time out error". I mean I haven't even sampled or loaded any sounds after loading the aps. and all. files with samples during powering up.

What the hell is happening and how to fix this?

edit. What I said about the random working of the Delkin card, it surely is just like that - totally random. Sometimes after five minutes I can't save no more for some reason and sometimes there's no problems. Though currently each and every one of my saving attempts hasn't been a success.

It doesn't sound like a card,wiring or format problem at all.It sounds like the card reader itself is bad.How long have you had it?

I bought it about half year ago. Still any tips/point of views would be appreciated so I can get rid of this problem.
