Note Repeat on the 2k classic

I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I cant seem to get the note repeat function to work properly for me. I am on the main screen. I am holding the note repeat/tap tempo button and I press a pad and i only hear the sound get triggered one time. I have the timing set to 1/16 and 1/16(3) and 1/32 and the results are the same. What am I doing wrong?

also, push play for it to work.. it doesn't work when the sequencer isn't playing.
