how to remove the kicks from the sample???

Everything is ok with my sample but i would like to have a different pattern of kicks so I have to remove the original kicks from the sample somehow.I was trying to filter my sample with sony acid but still you can hear the kicks a little...does anybody know any good program that could help me? or maybe you knowhow to set the filters in acid or in any other program, or maybe you know any plug ins vsts or something? please help. peace

hmm... so what about 36 mafia's "stay fly"? they somehow removed the kicks from the sample (willie hutch- "tell me why our love turned cold") i suppose...if you listen carefully to both records you'll realize what i'm talking about...there's got to be a way to remove the kicks i suppose...

You cant completely remove any 1 element off of a mixed track. You can use tricks like phase cancelling and equing and intricate slicing to get a great result but bottom line you cant take the eggs out of a cake after you baked it.

Ok, you can't remove a BD completely, but there are some ways to filter/modify the sample so that you can use it.

1) Vocal-Cut: Like the Vocals, the Bassdrum is in the center of the mix, so the Vocal-Cut should do a big improvement. (but then the sample is in mono of course)

2) Lo-Cut: Listen to the Bottom-Frequency of the Bassdrum and slowly move the Lo-Cut frequency up, until these lo frequencies are gone. Of course there still remails the Attack-Sound of the BD, wich you can eliminate with an EQ

3) EQ: The BD has 2 important frequencies: The Bottom (low) and the Attack (high). You've eliminatet the Bottom-Freuqency with the Lo-Cut, now you need to find the Attack-Frequency of the BD, so set the Q-Factor of the EQ really low (small band) and the gain to maximum. Then slowly fade through the frequencies until the bassdrum sounds really present and "in front of the mix".
Now that you've found the right frequency just turn the Gain down all the way and the BD should be really quiet.

4) Make shure the Hits of the original Bassdrum are really really in synch with the rest of the beat, otherwise it will sound weird.


For example: 2 Live-Crew - Me so horny; the original sample had a BD in it, but thanks to mixing and filtering you hear nothing of it in the final song.

no, its not.

U could also use adobe audition or another wave editor with spectral editing capabilities to remove the kick sounds, I find this works way better than filtering but you must keep in mind that any instrument that share frequencies with the kick during the duration of that kick(s) will be removed as well. Also this technique is a little on the advanced side and you may have to experiment a bit for the best results.



Using this I have "removed the eggs from the cake" but a bit of the flour had to come along with it.

Hand me the sample (PM) and I will do my best. But the result depend on the sample.

even with photosounder or whatever software you are using you can get damn close but not perfect. I tried photosounder...it is pretty damn wicked.But still when you layer your own drums and bass and mix it right you dont hear it anyway. I use samples with loud snares and kicks all the time, sometimes you just gotta deal wit what you got and work the beat around what the sample got goin on already.
