so ive been looking around the forums for this and have looked in the manual and still really haven't grasped the whole drum1, drum2, drum3 stuff. im pretty sure this is to use different programs simultaneously in a sequence, but whenever i apply it to a beat of mine i screw it up somehow and then have to start from scratch.

i not asking for a step by step process or anything like that just someone tell me their experience with it and if im goin in the right direction!

thnx and happy holidayz

You can have 4 active drums. Programs are tied to DRUMS.
So, 4 programs, just like you stated.
Programs cannot be tied to tracks, programs can ONLY be tied to DRUMS.

When you make an auto chroatic program the new program assigns itself
to DRUM1, so if you already have a program in DRUM1 it will be replaced within your track, you'll have to go and
manually put your original program back into DRUM1 and assign the new sliced program elsewhere.
Retarded yes I know but it is what it is.

So when you are making tracks.
You choose drum1 / drum2 / drum3 / drum4 right.

Those drums are tied to 4 programs. MPC can hold I forgot 24 or 26 programs in memory
but you can only have 4 active at a time.

So to change programs in different tracks you just change the drum that is tied to that program.
Right there on the main menu you can change drums in tracks.
Each program holds 4 banks, 64 samples total.

64 x 4 = 256 samples in your 4 active programs all at the same time.

That's one of the biggest 2kxl things upgraded from the 2k classic (2k can only have 1 program active).

Lemme guess, you did a slice or an autochrom, it made a new program, your beat played
correctly but the sounds in it were replaced by the new slice/autochrom program huh?

Yeah, you don't need to start over, just go into DRUM and re assign your original program to DRUM1 again, assign the slice/autochro program to DRUM2 or 3 or 4.

yo lamp
crazy i didnt get that last reply and now im here a year later looking up more info on some thing i still havent mastered on the MPC....but yeah you were right i did the slice feature and got stuck. couldnt figure out how to switch between PGMs in sequences so i just manually took each sample from the slice program, all 16 and transferred them over to PGM A. what tedious task that was ha! i totally used the XL like the classic in that i only used one PGM

so basically drum1-4 are holders. then you assign which PGM you want for each individual track in the main screen, correct? located on the main screen in between bars and velocity. whats the difference with it being off and being on a program though? ive just switched it to the desired pgm (1,2, etc) for each individual track and that seems to work...

I would only change the 'PGM' number via track in main screen ONCE per DRUM pgm. If you accidentally set the same DRUM to two different PGMs, things start to get really weird.

Coincidentally, last night I did some housekeeping myself regarding this. I designate tracks 61-64 as my pgm setup tracks. I set each one to a different DRUM (drum1 -> track 61, drum2 -> track 62, etc...), then I set the PGM number in those tracks, so I have no bugs.
