You might wanna experiment with layering using the SIMUL function as well.
And just tweak. Break the rules. Invention doesn't happen by sticking to any rules.

yeah just layer the drums with the same or different drum underneath it with the simul function-it never fails to make it thump

Yes, layer your snares at various pitches.

also, TURN DOWN YA **** HI-HATS! So many beats i hear have no expressive play. No velocity changes...... something any real drummer would frown upon. Play those pads like you mean it! Stand up if you have to.

good thing to do is when U only find 1 kick for example. try copy`n it to 3 diffrent pads with different pitches not more then just (+/-) 1 or 2.

another is to make the kicks snares or hihats more stiffer or punchier is to gate the drums in the edit mode where U asain the samples

how I do:

turn off quantize, ignore full level an do-re-do-re-do till its damn close..then rather than quantize all the hats {or whatever} I adjust only the hits that stick out too much. I usually will step edit or quantize the first kick drum, just to make sure its right on 1 .. that helps me avoid weird shit when I chain patterns together.

I spend alot more time tweaking sounds than I do programing patterns, but I usually start with a basic kit...throw a pattern down.for scratch. then start stackn.
Most times I end up running all the layers to different outputs..like my 3 kick samples into 3 channelss on the desk + any outboard gear...it makes it easier to invert phase if needed and sometimes EQ works better than filters.
In the end I resample to bounce down my "new" sounds and put em in a kit.....without doubt I end up doing a bit more tweaking when I use that kit in a track.. but thats more for makin room for vox and such.

after u get a basic beat goin rightslow the tempo down to half the original temp, then punch in sum triple kicks or snares then turn the bpm back up to the original speed and youll have some quick rolling kicks or snares ,takes a bit to learn and rthis aint really tweakin but its a great trick
