cant help but to think about that old footage of slum village where jay dee played on a mixer.. hooked with two mpc 3ks... like they were turntables...

it sounded SO HARD...

mean stuff...

it leads me to think that most .. if not all great producers that come to my mind are djs... and in 2010 (yess i)... uve got to have at least more then a single chapter to ur resumé...

1)so to me it would sound like a great opportunity to get into djin... if u cant afford the real deal...try and get a digital mixer with mp3s for the moment.. but like... ur mp on one side.. the deck (mp3-vinyl-serato..etc) on the other side.. allowing u to make sick mixes and reflip ur shit...

i know some heads are gonna go like mp3-jays.. **** dat shit... but anyways.. all im saying is that.. if ur on boards on a regular basis and want to rock a crowd.. learn how to use a mixer...


2) for the intro of ur set... a good crowd pleaser is to mess around with the sample only.. like if ur into some filtering works and stuff.. its always fun to trigger the pads and mess around with that and then.. go like.. boom... and let the whole prerecorded drums come in at the same time..

3) u can always do beat drops with ur mpc... really easy.. really fun... sequence muting and shit or with the mixer..

5) invite someone to rock over ur beats.. rhyme, play an instrument... sing.. dance... (thats def not something im gonna do in the near future but hey.. im just listing down some shit)

This is a tough call. Unless you're doing something "unique" with the MPC it would be tough on the performance side. It would be tough alone just to get booked by promoters for shows based on just using the MPC. There are ways around this like having an MC and/or a DJ on stage with you and come up with some dope stage routines and start building a buzz from doing that. Then again it would still be tough getting booked in the first place unless the MC or DJ is known or if you're known for producing and putting out music.

I personally do a lot of performing, but I'm actually an MC first. It's rare that I bring my MPC to shows, but I do now and then and devote a little time to it during my set. In fact, here's a little clip of me rockin live while I have my MPC on stage:

Like I said, this is rare cuz I prefer being an MC when I'm on stage and getting in everyone's face while I have a mic lol.
