Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

By barefootbryan2335 Thu Aug 19, 2004 3:04 am
its about what there for, a fantom probly has deep effects but akais effects compliment the crisp itght akai sound.you want like a switch thatll put it into like a roland/virus/emu type sound it aint gonna happen.so get a mv-8000 for that but akais effects are great for what there for.

i really dont even care about the fx, but expanding out the EQ options and just improving it period would make me nut in my pants......

....again

A nicer compressor/limiter would be nice as well

The rest of the FX are good for what they are therefor, but no matter how good they make them, Im still going to mix in PT...

yeah yeah, so back to my question: can the algorithms be replaced ?

the fx are on a card btw, I remember people complaining that they didnt have the fx card which comes default in the US

so maybe the process of replacing would maybe be as easy as building a new card and putting it up for sale.....

I know that on the Z4 and Z8 the FX board is a seperate board. The MPC and the Z samplers actually use the same design so it may be possible that a new FX board could be made.

The FX arent great lets face it but if youre creative enuff you can make magic with anything... I love the 4k regardless....maybe you should have purchased a 2000 xl and a seperate FX unit???.... there arent any units I can think of that have incredible FX built in..That's why we use mixes and FX units in the Big Studio...LOL

The effects in the MPC are what you make of them....

IT took me awhile to figure out how to make dub style tracks and stuff with
Delays and reverbs,...

But now I have my own personally fx settings that give me a sound Ive heard from no other fx......

I also route my fx as a send...
Into a pre amp....You got to understand if you are just using the internal processer for sound it willl come out digital.. Make sure you run your signal chain into a mixing board then send the fx into the aux of the mixing board and it comes out 10 times more warm.....\

Other than that YEa somethings can be changed but it was a year ago to 2 years ago that we didnt have the FX at 0db...

It was stuck at -12db and none of the Akai people knew why? until os 6 or betas and stuff.....

So we can upgrade whats there but think about the time invovlved in gettting OS 6...

If your so worried about FX then your not producing...
Fx is something to lay back upon....
You should create your own reverb....
Use 2 mics in a big room
One mic 20 feet away from the mpcs monitors...
and another 40 feet....
I use neuman u-87s a large condenser...

I allow the 20 ft mike to barley come in until I hear the room and the furthest mikeI use for subtleness...

I will constantly up the signal on the furthest mic to allow for variations in velocity when key moments occur...

This is what Led Zepplin used for that huge kick...

NOt for monitors but on the drums..
You also should look at this...

The MATRIX movie used fx they created.....

When you hack into the matrix you hear this electronic breakin through sound...

Its feedback..,.. Just like you spoke of Dub and mad prof...And perry//
"lEE SCRATCH PERRY IS INSANE, He loses it too much look at his shoes"

Feedback driven back on 2 channels through aux then slowly brought up until a slight rumble and then eq is filtered off in a sweep

all I can say is experiment cause I make money off of the Fx on the mPc 4000
So for you to call them garbage is true but,,,That garbage paid for the mpc and all other equipment

u guys r incredible, i keep forgetting how ppl dont listen. i said the fx on the 4k suck and asked if it is possible for them to be fixed and u ppl assumed:
1-i cant produce with the 4k
2-im better off with the 2k
3-i dont use a mixing board and external fx (allthow i mentioned that i did)
4-im thinking about getting the mv (lol)

its cool whateva,
i think manufacturing fx cards is a great idea, kind of like the third part fx cards for the VS recorders.
and freedom, i know what u mean by working with what u have and making the best out of it but damn man i expect a reverb to do something for me, and level is not the only problem, i run my outs thru preamps but still the fx themselves r crap. anyway i dont want to sound like a wining btch so i guess we just have to wait and see.

they should really consider making a new fx card if its a good one it'll be a hit im sure.

peace

I know I would buy a new card...

So I know Akai could take are money...

Cause I BET EVERY MPC OWNER WOULD WANT A NEW FX CARD..

Real time time strech aetc.

ohohoh Serato pitch and time type algorithims ahhhh yess then we would be working..

I remember an article about a vst plugin for the akai...
Hope that also comes soon

the algorhtims uaed in serato pitch and time allow you to keep the tempo constanrt and change the pitch of a sound without any degradation of sound qaulity if you pump in the tempo...

if not it still works great..

Basically you can change a beats tempo without changing ptich too visa versa or you can make shit shorter without changing any speed

thanx for the answers

what does that "Serato" word come from ?
I knew about "picthing" and "timestrectching" but never heard of "Serato Picthing"

by the way Freedom, did you get any results about one of your boys measuring the frequency response of A-D converters in the MPC4000 ?

thanx again

Peace
