thanks a millillion . . . i did it up with your recipe and everything sounds much crispier. id post it up but i gotta go and spin tonight and i aint got any more time. but im pretty happy. you identified the problem with that track (and others) and offered a good solution that also opens up alot of areas that i havent been paying proper attention to.

so let me ask you, what else do find needs frequency filtering like that regularly? is frequency clashing something you just try to keep an eye out for, or are there more things you generally know are going to need to have to work together, like the bass and kick - which you cant seem to be able to ignore when you're messing with low frequencies. is it a low end thing? or is it something you'd mess around with when you lay vocals on a track?

im sure theres software that can identify problem areas like that that might escape the ear. so that begs the question of whether its really usefull, or whether a general idea of where the frequencies of different instruments are can get you by just fine....


yeah thats call subtractive eqing. when u are take out signals to clean **** up. Certain freqs clash and sit in the same area like kick and bass.

this is a good reference for stuff like this. What u need for the pc is a frequecny analyizer or i think its a spectrem analyser i dont know if thats the name of it.


see the human ear can detect freqs from 20hz to 20khz
20hz-------------------------0--------------------------20hz.
everysound u hear makes a freq that sits on there. towards the lower end u got bass and kicks, the middle is like the meat of a guitar and piano, or maybe a snare crack, the highs are where the air, hiss kinda, of a song is and hats and ****. u have to vizulize sounds like this. it will help u tenfold.

There is no magic formula but I suggest you sit down and test stuff.
JUST DON'T OVER EQ OR YOUR MIX WILL SOUND FLAT. AS I SAY, LOOK AT THE SPACES IN YOUR MIX... WITH PANING YOU CAN ALREADY FREE UP SOME SPACE, THEN WITH EQ YOU CAN ADD OR TAKE AWAY FREQUENCIES, AND WITH A BIT OF REVERB, YOU CAN GIVE DEPTH TO YOUR SOUND. JUST THINK THAT IF YOU BOOST TWICE THE SAME FREQUENCY YOU WILL GET DOUBLE AMLITUDE, WHICH THEN MEANS
DISTORTION AND MUDDINESS TO YOUR MIX....

Read what I said about the bass 300 hz. try it YOU Will see it works magic. if you boost the kick and the bass at 300hz it will sound muddy.
try the bass with a boost at around 300hz (play around to get the sound you like and then take some of that 300hz frequency away from the kick. if you don't like some of the click in the bass, take away slightly from the high mids like 2000hz. then take awy from the kick the frequency you have boosted on the bass and presto.

Instead of boosting a sound at a particular frequency, I find it more effective to use subtractive eq in conjunction with compression. So I basically cut out all the frequencies I dont want in there, and then by compressing it, It boosts all the other frequencies that I do want. For example, I have my Bass sample in Soundforge, I will cut out 0-40hz and 2-20khz completely, then compress the sound (not too heavily) then i will apply the same eq, and then compress it again. In this way, I am effectively boosting those sweet frequencies without any distortion, and it seems to cut out those unwanted frequencies even moreso on the second eq.
