ASR10 and the MPC sequencer???

I know a few people use this setup so I was hoping someone could answer this question. What is the recording procedure when you use these two together. Do I hit record on the MPC and play the ASR or do I hit record on both? I tried both ways but I'm not getting any playback. Someone help a brother out!

most of the people I know that use that setup use the ASR as their sampler and the MPC as the sequencer. So sample everything into the ASR and have it MIDI-ed up to the MPC. Then make the beat on the MPC and it will trigger the samples on the ASR.

Exactly, I actually use the ASR as my sampler and midi controller to control my Mo Phatt and JD990. The ASR is on midi channels 1B-16B, but it only uses 8 (8 instrument tracks) You have to set your ASR to:

Edit--------->System/Midi ------> Multi instead of Global
Edit--------->Instrument--------> Midi instead of Local

Djames, I already have the setup done, it's just the recording procedure that I'm not sure of. The manual tells you how to hook it up but it doesn't tell you how to use it. Another problem I have is when I'm creating a drum track and I want to add a snare on a differnt channel. The whole track changes to the instrument that I'm using. (so my kick disappears and the the whole track is snares). I set the midi clock on the MPC and set up the channels, is there something else I have to do to the MPC. I 'll take any advice, thanks.

I was trying to explain using the ASR as if it is a sound module. Instrument 1 corresponds with midi channel 1 on the MPC and so on and so forth. As for your drums if they are all on the same instrument, just seperate them on the MPC by putting them on seperate tracks. Each track will be assigned to the same midi channel for example if the drums are on instrument 1 then set your tracks to midi channel 1 on each of your individual drum tracks and put the kick on one the snare on two the hi hats on three and so on. You can also load the same kit on multiple instrument tracks, just make sure you change the midi channel. Like for tracking purposes I might want to assign different outputs on my ASR to the ins tracks, this way I can track all of my sounds seperate without having to go into the edit wavesample screen. Hopefully this is making sense to you since you have an ASR if not I don't know of any other way.

That is exactly the way I do it Djames and I still have problems. The manual says : EDIT/SYSTEM-MIDI PAGE, SET TO MULTI
EDIT/SEQ-SONG PAGE, SET CLOCK SOURCE TO MIDI
EDIT/SEQ-SONG PAGE, SET SEQ REC SOURCE TO MULTI

I also followed the other steps to set up my channels in the EDIT/INSTRUMENT. I was wondering do you follow the same steps I listed up top. It's on page 338 on the ASR manual. Let me know if I'm doing the right thing, thanks dawg!!

Actually, I don't use the sequencer on the ASR period. I noticed those SEQ/Song settings are if you are going to be using the sequncer on the ASR. I have'nt had any problems using the MPC sequencer though. I did'nt even have to do anything special to the midi settings in the MPC. I don't understand where you are having your problem. Did you try the Edit-----> Instrument Midi instead of Local or Both?

I don't use the ASR sequencer, I'm trying to use the MPC for that. When your ready to record, what do you do? Maybe I'm not recording the right way. Do you just hit record on the MPC and start playing the keys on the ASR? Sorry for all the questions but I work by myself so I really don't have anyone else to ask but you guys. You press Record on the Asr first it will read : "WAITING" then hit record and playstart on the MPC. Make sure your midi connections are correct.

That is only if you're using the sequencer on the ASR and the MPC.

Abicus: yes I just hit record on the MPC and play the keys on the ASR and whatever I played on the ASR records in the MPC via midi. Make sure your midi connections are right, your audio is connected, and make sure the sound/instrument you are playing out of the ASR is set to "Midi" not Local or Both.

Troubleshooting:
1st - are sounds coming from the ASR when the keys are pressed.
**Sounds should only be coming out of the ASR when the MPC is set to the proper midi channel. If this is not the case check your settings.

2nd - does the ASR play sounds assigned to the MPC pads
**IF so all you need to do is switch from "Drum" to "Midi" on the MPC

Try these out, and let me know what's up.

So you telling me all this time i dont need to use the sequencer on the ASR 10? only the MPC? What about if i have a sample on the ASR? can i still record midi on the MP? let me know, cause thats good info....

Right you just set the ASR so that it's your midi controller and module all in one. Just connect the midi in and out and set the ASR to Multi and the instruments to Midi and you are all set.
